Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999, the 996 GT3 was the first water-cooled GT3 and also the most powerful naturally aspirated 911 of the time. It’s the last 911 to have been handmade in Zuffenhausen but it is also the first production Porsche to complete a lap of the Nürburgring in less than eight minutes, with Walter Röhrl on board. The racing version of this car even won the 1999 24 hours of Le Mans in its category! The first phase of the 996 GT3 has never been sold in the USA but it can now be imported overseas.
The 996 GT3 uses the body of the standard versions but the ride height is lowered by 30 mm, and the car is equipped with very beautiful two-piece 18″ rims. The front bumper is specific to the GT3, the side skirts are reworked and The rear engine features an imposing two-stage adjustable rear wing to help increase downforce.The bucket seats lighten the car by 20 kg, the removal of the rear seat saves another 8 kilos, ultimately the weight. final grave at 1,350 kg.
At the heart of the 996 GT3 is a magnificent 3,598 cc M96/79 Metzger naturally aspirated engine, based on that of the Porsche 962 and Le Mans-winning 911 GT1. On the GT3, 360 hp is expressed at 7200 rpm, with 370 Nm of torque at 5000 rpm. The 100 hp/liter mark is exceeded for the first time on an atmospheric flat 6. Finally, power is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission inherited from the fabulous 993 GT2. This allows the car to reach 60 mph in 4.7 seconds for a maximum speed of 187 mph (302 km/h), making it the first production Porsche to exceed 300 km/h !
