When Porsche launched the Cayman and Cayman S in 2005, the brand deliberately kept the performance below that of the legendary 911. Apart from a few special models, the first generation remained at a reasonable distance, possibly to maintain the exclusive status of the 911.
This changed in 2010 with the Cayman R. For the first time, Porsche moved the Cayman closer to the 911 and reintroduced the legendary "R" designation, a nod to the rare and racing-oriented 911 R from 1967.
