BjornSYX – Belgium’s Mezger Masters

BjornSYX – Belgium’s Mezger Masters

I had barely stepped out of the car when I heard it. Somewhere behind the building’s clean lines and muted glass front, a flat-six engine cracked through a warm-up sequence that sounded more like Stuttgart in the ’90s than a quiet industrial estate in the West of Belgium. The building, from the outside, gave little away – no oversized logo, no banners, no sales slogans. But inside, on the first floor behind large glass walls and surrounded by about twenty meticulously curated cars, was one of the most focused Porsche operations I’ve ever visited: BjornSYX.

From BMWs to 964s – how Bjorn found his Porsche focus

Bjorn Syx greets me with a calm nod and a firm handshake. He is young, but speaks with the conviction of someone who has driven, fixed, and rebuilt more cars than most collectors ever will. His journey into the Porsche world didn’t start with a childhood dream of a 911 Turbo poster, though. “I was more into BMWs, especially the E30 M3,” he explains. “Porsches were always too expensive. I respected them, but they felt out of reach.”

Rally Driver and car dealer Bjorn Syx
Bjorn Syx can look back at a successful rally career and now offers his technical expertise to future Mezger-engined Porsche owners.

That changed about four years ago, when he transitioned from a broader classic car business into what would become one of Belgium’s most selective Porsche specialists. Today, more than half the company’s inventory wears a Porsche badge. All of them have a Mezger engine, designed by Porsche engine mastermind Hans Mezger – and most of them are air-cooled.

Built to be driven – and rebuilt by BjornSYX

Bjorn started early. At 18, he founded his own dealership, not only selling but also handling the mechanicals himself. He had trained as a car mechanic and quickly realized that real quality control could only come from doing the work in-house. “Every car we offer, we’ve worked on mechanically. Dry ice blasting, engine inspections, suspension work, everything. If the engine has to come out, it comes out. No shortcuts.” That philosophy hasn’t changed since.

The team is still small – just three people in-house, supported by a proven, first-class body shop and two carefully chosen photographers. Bjorn’s staff also follows his very specific mantra: “If we wouldn’t be comfortable owning the car ourselves, we won’t sell it. It’s that simple.”

What makes a Porsche good enough for BjornSYX

Walking through the upper-level showroom is like flipping through the pages of Porsche’s greatest hits, filtered through a very specific lens. No accident cars, no weird specs, no sketchy histories. Bjorn buys mostly from private owners across Europe and won’t hesitate to reject even a rare car if it doesn’t meet his standards. “We are collectors ourselves, so it’s not just about buying and selling. We don’t chase volume and know what to buy. With us, you’re also getting empathy for collectors. We want our customers to come back!”

At BjornSYX, you won’t find any Porsche, that isn’t powered with an engine based on Hans Mezger’s design. That means, only air-cooled 911s plus early water-cooled GT and Turbo models.

Bjorn stays true to this without exception. He is a man with firm principles. For example, he only deals with Mezger-engined cars. Except 996 & 997 GT and Turbo models, you’ll never see any water-cooled Porsches at the Belgian workshop

A turbocharged milestone: the Cadmium Yellow Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6

That ethos becomes tangible as we walk over to one of the showroom’s crown jewels. Parked in a spot that catches the late morning light just right is a 1993 Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 in Paint-to-Sample Cadmium Yellow. With under 24,000 km and a known history that reads like a movie script, the car feels almost surreal. Originally delivered in January 1993, it remained with its first owner until a tragic airplane accident claimed his life in 2009. For over a decade, the car was stored by his daughter, who only registered it in her name in 2021.

The Turbo 3.6 was exported to Belgium in 2023 and meticulously recommissioned over the past two years – a process that cost €62,000 in mechanical work alone. It stands on 18-inch Speedline wheels, sports a black leather interior, and looks as if it just left Zuffenhausen yesterday. “That’s peak 964,” Bjorn says, quietly. “For me, it’s the ultimate Mezger car – raw, powerful, and built with zero compromise.” Hence, Bjorn also sees this particular car as a real milestone in the company’s history so far.

Racecraft and rally stages – why the 964 fits Bjorn so well

Bjorn Syx’s love for Mezger-powered Porsches isn’t just business. It’s deeply personal. Bjorn started rallying in 2018 with an Opel Kadett C, then moved on to a BMW M3 E30 and quickly made a name for himself in historic racing circles. “I got addicted to the sensation,” he says. “The sound, the handling, the emotion.”

He’s won events, built several race cars, and once even clinched a round of the European Historic Rally Championship. Today, he sees the 964 as the ideal platform for someone with his driving DNA. “It’s small, it has a good chassis, and the turbo versions – the 3.3 and 3.6 alike – give you so much power to play with. It still amazes me how good they are when set up properly.”

Across continents – how BjornSYX supports global collectors

Beyond buying and selling, BjornSYX takes pride in going the extra mile. Cars are shipped globally, often under tight and unusual circumstances. “We once flew a car to Amelia Island because the buyer wanted it ready for the concours weekend. Another client from the US can’t import his GT3 until November, so we’re storing it for him until then.” His clientele is diverse, but often high-profile. “World-class athletes, collectors, people who value privacy. We’ve even signed NDAs just so a seller wouldn’t know who the buyer was.”

No drama, just excellence – trust as the core principle

And yet, there’s no air of arrogance here. Bjorn is modest to the core, and his cars tend to exceed expectations. “Clients often say the cars look even better in real life than how we described them. That’s probably the best compliment we can get.” He shrugs off the idea of cutting corners. “If a 3.3 Turbo has accident damage that wasn’t properly repaired, it’s not a bargain. It’s a problem.”

Careful growth, same standards – what’s next for BjornSYX

Looking ahead, he wants to expand – more cars, more technicians, more service. But finding the right inventory remains a challenge. “Everybody is looking for the same kind of cars. It’s hard to find a good one. But, as I said before, we’re collectors ourselves, so we understand what matters.” About 60 percent of the clientele comes from Europe. Apart from that, the United Sates are a strong market too, with occasional sales to the Arabian Emirates.

“We believe in every car” – a final word from Belgium’s Mezger specialists

Before I leave, Bjorn walks me to the showroom’s exit. The Cadmium Yellow Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6 glows in the light behind us. “We believe in every car we offer – to drive, to enjoy, or to invest in,” he says. And with that, it becomes clear: BjornSYX isn’t just selling Mezger-powered legends. They’re curating them for the next chapter of their lives.

BjornSYX isn’t about flashy presentation, it’s about doing things the right way. Hence, they stick to their roots and do what they are best at: Offering you the best Mezger-engined Porsche, they can find.
