In 1989, a large portion of the newly reintroduced, one-year-only, Porsche 911 Speedsters left the factory wearing Guards Red paint with color-coordinated wheel centers. Other hues could be ordered, however, and it is undeniable that this little-used example looks terrific in Silver Metallic over black leather with black-centered Fuchs alloys and a black top.
Completed in July of 1989, this Speedster, as a Canadian-market example, includes metric instrumentation. As were virtually all 1989 Speedsters sent to Canada and the US, this car was fitted with steel Turbo fender flares, but without a rear wing. Nearly all those sold in the European and rest-of-world markets retained narrower standard Carrera bodywork. Equipped with a normally-aspirated flat-six of 3,164 cubic centimeters developing 231 horsepower, these new Speedsters were quick for their day (0-60 mph in about six seconds) with a claimed top speed of over 150 mph.
According to its included Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this Speedster was factory-equipped with electrically-height-adjustable sport seats, power windows, climate control, a Blaupunkt Reno stereo, integrated fog lamps, headlamp washers, wheel locks, a limited-slip differential within its five-speed transaxle, a heavy-duty windshield washing system, and a set of Bridgestone RE71 tires. The unused collapsible spare tire is accompanied by its correct and original jack and air compressor.
This Speedster’s first owner, Mr. Roger LeBlanc of Montreal, registered it on 3 September 1993. An original Porsche Assistance card was issued in his name, and it is included with the car, along with the original owner’s manual with Speedster supplement, original warranty and maintenance books, spare keys, and a selection of maintenance invoices spanning 1993 to 1998. In 1993, 1995, and 1998 it was serviced by Auto Strasse in Montreal for Mr. LeBlanc.
The present New York-based consignor, only its second private owner, purchased the Porsche last year via Legendary Motorcars of Canada, who had acquired it in 2017; it has remained in storage since. Various accompanying import/export documents detail its movements between Canada and the United States.
Indicating only 8,151 kilometers (~5,065 miles) at cataloguing, this Speedster’s paintwork appears excellent, and the interior is almost perfect, including a set of black Speedster floor mats. The engine compartment is equally clean and appears fully original, although the magnesium fan and alloy doghouse show some corrosion commensurate with the car’s age.
An appealing example of a model long desired for its stylistic purity and engaging performance, this beautiful Speedster would be a worthy addition to any serious Porsche collection.
