With the new 964’s release looming near, Porsche released one last variant of the G-Series 911 in 1984. Not only was the new car, the Carrera 3.2, a revival of the “Carrera” nameplate last used in 1977, but it also the culmination of everything Porsche had learned about the chassis’ abilities up to that point. Following the success of the SC, the new model firmly re-established the 911 as the company’s flagship. While most of the vehicle was updated, the most noticeable changes were to the engine, with output increasing to 207hp in US-spec thanks to a displacement increasing to 3.2L and a new Bosch L-Jetronic fuel/ignition controller.

Just as before, the Carrera 3.2 was available in coupe, cabriolet, and Targa variants. The car was a resounding success, with buyers and critics lauding the car for its brisk performance and exceptional road feel. Minor updates to the interior improved comfort, though dealers happily escorted those more interested in long-distance comfort to the more expensive 928. Today, enthusiasts recognize the Carrera 3.2 as an exceptional variation of the traditional 911 theme.
