While the thought of replacing the 911 is absurd today, the model’s fate was at risk in the 1970s. Dealers and their customers yearned for more power, more prestige, and more comfort – as good as the 911 of the time was, the company felt they could do better. Thusly, they engineered the 928. With a front-engined V8, a rear-mounted transmission, and a futuristic design, the car couldn’t have been more different than its forebearer.

Released for the 1979 model year, the car was, perhaps, too ahead of its time. Costing as much as a 911 Turbo due to its exceptional build quality, high level of standard equipment, and incredible performance, the 928 hit all of the company’s goals in all but sales metrics, especially in the model’s later years. The release of the 911 SC, which revitalized interest in the 911, surely didn’t do the 928 any favors. Even still, the company continued to produce the car in a number of variants through 1995, whereupon the company allowed the nameplate to rest, leaving certain variants of the 911 and the new Cayenne SUV (and later Panamera sedan) to take its place as the brand’s grand tourer.

Of its varieties, one of the most memorable is the S4. Released in 1987, the S4 introduced a sleeker, updated design language that brought the car in line with the updated 944 and soon-to-be-released 964-generation 911. In addition, the car received an updated 48-valve, 5.0L V8 offering 320hp and was outfitted with emissions equipment designed to meet requirements across the world with little adjustment. Numerous other changes ensured the car continued to exceed performance and luxury expectations, with the car matching the 911 Turbo in top speed. Today, the 928 is vaunted for its exceptional grand touring ability and unique, and often underrated, place in Porsche’s history.
