When the 964 was released it marked the biggest change in the 911s then 25-year history. 85% of the car’s components had been revised and for the first time, all-wheel-drive was an option. In fact, not only was it an option, the 964 was initially released as a C4 showing just how much confidence Porsche had in their new system. The C2 followed 5 months later and then the tiptronic option. Coil springs, power steering, ABS and the most powerful (and best sounding) naturally aspirated flat-six engine up to that point are the modern touches that when married with the classic 911 silhouette make the 964 such a charming car. That balance between traditional 911 and modernity makes it an easy and approachable drive. Driving is an instantly invigorating but solid and balanced experience: steering is intuitive, the chassis is sure and able, and feedback from the wheel keeps the driver in constant communication with the road. The 964 is a rapidly appreciating classic that is truly usable day to day whilst retaining that traditional aesthetic and exciting engagement that are so prized by Porsche “purists.”
