Porsche Targa – Open-Air Driving at Its Best
“Porsche Targa – Open-Air Driving in Action” 224 pages, hardcover, approximately 150 color and black-and-white photographs. The book was produced in collaboration with the Porsche Archives and is the first definitive work devoted exclusively to the Targa model. Available in German and English.
Porsche Targa – The Book on the Iconic Concept
The Targa is the most unique 911. Not a coupé, not a convertible, but a third category: developed in 1965 in response to stricter U.S. safety regulations, the so-called “safety convertible” with its distinctive roll bar evolved into a vehicle class of its own within just a few years. The name itself is a tribute—to the Sicilian Targa Florio, that legendary road race in which Porsche claimed eleven overall victories between 1956 and 1973.
Ramp and the Porsche Archives are exploring this very story in depth for the first time. “Porsche Targa – Open-Top Driving in Action” sheds light on the motivation behind the concept, details the development process, and traces the evolution of the Targa bar across eight generations of the 911—from the classic original Targa of the F-series to the current models with their electrically retractable roof mechanism. There’s also a chapter that extends the concept to its relatives: the 914, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder.
The book draws on exclusive material from the Porsche archives—sketches, brochures, and factory photographs—and supplements them with feature articles on the Targa Florio and contemporary insights spanning six decades. The volume is designed as a large-format coffee-table book, reflecting the typical editorial standards of the ramp editorial team led by editor Michael Köckritz.
For 911 enthusiasts who have found that the Targa line has always been treated only in passing, this book fills a gap.
