Het voertuig in detail

The word “iconic” is often overused, but it certainly applies to the 356 Speedster, one of the most famous Porsches and inarguably one of the most significant, recognizable sports cars ever produced. Carrying a base price of $2,995, the Speedster proved a hit in the showroom and on the track, especially in warmer climates. Speedsters proved so popular in amateur racing that entire grids would often be filled with these diminutive warriors.

This Speedster, chassis 84068, is reported to have lived all its life in the dry American West. Purchased from a coworker in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1972, the consignor has cherished their “dream car” for over 50 years, bringing it with them after a move to Lake Tahoe, where the High Sierra climate proved ideal for the Speedster’s air-cooled design.

In 2021, the consignor embarked on a full restoration which featured a bare-metal respray in what is believed to be its original shade of Stone Grey over green leather upholstery. During the restoration, a 1957 Porsche 1600 engine was rebuilt to Super specifications and fitted into the car. Transferring the power to the road is a period-correct Speedster gearbox which was rebuilt with BBAB gear configuration by the noted Vic Skirmants of 356 Enterprises in Michigan. The car has been used sparingly, with reportedly fewer than 1,000 miles added since the restoration’s completion.

The consignor was able to source the car’s numbers-matching engine case (numbered 67613), which is included in the sale. While the original engine is included in a restored long-block capacity, the parts necessary to complete it can be sourced from the engine currently in the car. Additionally, the Speedster is accompanied by a copy of its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, an extra set of refurbished, date-stamped 9/57 Sudrad steel wheels, reproduction tool kit, original steering wheel, chrome luggage rack, and set of 1950s “Pan Am” leather luggage.

A wonderful example of the revered 356 Speedster, this car, offered out of over 50 years of fastidious ownership and sporting marvelous presentation, is sure to endear itself to any Porsche enthusiast.
