1992 Porsche 928 GTS – RM Sotheby’s

Road & Track magazine called Porsche’s sophisticated 928 GTS ‘a glorious final act’, the last evolution of the front-engined 928 and its wonderfully balanced transaxle chassis layout. Produced from 1992 to 1995, this iteration of Porsche’s grand tourer featured a 5.4-litre, 350 bhp, 32-valve four-cam engine, most of them mated to a Mercedes-sourced automatic transmission. Only 400 or so of the 1,389 units produced for the 1992 model year were fitted with a five-speed gearbox, and these are much sought after by enthusiasts. It could sprint to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reach an effortless 275 km/h. High-speed stability was enhanced thanks to the 928’s unique ‘Weissach’ rear axle, which helped eliminate lift-throttle oversteer by allowing the rear suspension to adjust itself during cornering.

The GTS’s sleek, aerodynamic body offered flared rear quarters and a new rear taillight panel, a rear wing in body colour, Cup-style outside rear-view mirrors, and silver-painted 17-inch-diameter Cup wheels. As with all 928s, the GTS was luxuriously appointed, with multizone air-conditioning, an electric sunroof, power seats, and a high-end entertainment system. A pair of driving lamps is integrated into the front bumper, and there is a rear window wiper.

Here is a lovely and very desirable first-year GTS that has been driven just 94,000 km. Finished in handsome Pearl Black Metallic (L738) with a full black leather interior, it was delivered new to Porsche Spindler A.G. in Würzburg, Germany, in July 1992. The consignor states that it is supplied with a documented maintenance history and shows little evidence of wear. Manual-transmission 928s rarely come to market, and this fine example is an opportunity not to be missed.
