Das Fahrzeug im Detail

The fifth owner studied mechanical engineering at Cal Poly Pomona and later joined the racing team of American race car legend, Dan Gurney. As an avid race car enthusiast and engineer, he became quite fond of early Porsches. According to the previous owner, the car was offered for sale as a project by Mr. Fulcher and was purchased by the past owner on December 10, 1982. Following the purchase of the Carrera 2000GS Cabriolet, the 356 was stored in a warehouse where the owner-operated his Robotics Company, in Orange, California for two decades. Then the Carrera 2 was moved to an airplane hangar in Chino, California for 10 years and finally moved to the owner’s home in Idaho where it has been stored for the past 7 years. The Carrera 2 was the 3rd Porsche of three Porsches including a 1964 Porsche 356SC and a 1978 911SC. In 1987, the exterior was disassembled, stripped, and repainted in Bali Blue (6412) by Tim Deshler of Deshler’s Paint. After the paintwork was completed the owner’s busy schedule kept him from completing the project and the 356 was relocated to a hangar at Chino airport where it remained for several decades.

In late 2022, European Collectibles was commissioned to inspect the Carrera 2. The paintwork is nearly three decades old, it still presents well with even gaps and panel fit. As a testament to the preservation and originality of the body, the inner structure, rear engine compartment, and front trunk area retain factory insulation. All the original glass, factory brightwork, and soft top frame have survived. The interior is trimmed in black leatherette, complete with front seats, rear seats, a dashboard, VDO instruments, and door panels. A wood Les Leston steering sits ahead of factory VDO instrumentation with an AM/FM Cassette radio. Date-coded 2/64 Lemmerz 4 ½” x 15” chrome wheels are fitted to Michelin 165 SR15 tires. Due to its long life in climate-controlled storage, the undercarriage remains exceptionally condition with no indications of rust.

Mechanically powered by a period-correct 2.0L four-cam engine (Type 587/1). The Carrera 2 is not currently running and driving. However, the 4-cam engine has been run on an engine stand and a video was made. On January 4, 2023, a compression test was performed, and we found excellent compression results – Cylinder 1 – 200 psi, Cylinder 2 – 200 psi, Cylinder 3 – 200 psi, Cylinder 4 – 205 psi. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission (Type 741) with a four-wheel disc braking system. Complete with jack, partial tool kit, BN4 gas heater (No. 1519), Kardex, and boot cover. An incredibly rare opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable 356C 4-Cam Carrera 2 models to restore.
