The G-Type remains for us one of the most successful generations of 911.
The 6-cylinder flat engine remains a safe bet, providing pleasure and sensations while remaining reliable and reasonable. The use of the 3.2L is enhanced by the new G50 gearbox. Introduced in 1987, it appears more efficient and usable in dynamic driving than its predecessor 915. Versatility is a major asset of the 911 and the G-type is a good example.
This 911 3.2 G50 is a great opportunity to acquire the essence of the 911 in a rare configuration. The price of these cars being on an upward slope, it becomes urgent to treat yourself…
Our examplar was delivered new in 1988 in the south of France. The car has known 6 owners before its last buyer, located in the Lyon region. We have the history of the car since 2002. This one is composed of a picture of the original logbook and all the invoices since 20 years.
Let’s start with its configuration: white Grand Prix with a beautiful plum interior. A rare, elegant and terribly efficient configuration. The original long-range headlights (optional at the time) complete the eightee’s style of this beauty queen. On the label under the hood are present the following option codes: C05, 395, 425, 567, 650. These numbers translate into a sunroof, a rear window wiper, a green tinted windshield and light metal forged wheels. In the course of its life, our car has suffered one shock in 2018, which was repaired with the greatest care by Porsche, with invoices to prove it. Let’s leave this boring part for the passionate side of the car.
The history of the 911 Carrera 3.2 „G
The 911 has already been around for 10 years when Porsche decides to change its flagship model, indeed in 1974, the 911 knows profound changes with this new version „G“.
Recognizable among all with its bumpers with gusset, the logo type „911“ black on the rear hood below the black engine grill and the band Porsche between the rear lights. Inside, however, the only difference is the seats with integrated headrests.
At the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Stuttgart-based brand presents the Carrera 3.2, aesthetically the look evolves very little compared to the SC.
A new spoiler with integrated fog lamps and a Carrera logo on the engine hood are just a few of the small details of the 3.2.
Inside, the Carrera 3.2 still has the typical 911 ambience, with adjustable seats that allow the driver to enjoy a perfect driving position. The build quality is impeccable, the impression of robustness is more than present on board. However, the real 911 experience begins when the driver inserts the key on the left and turns it to start the ignition. The 6-cylinder flat engine starts with a roar that is typical of air-cooled engines.
On the road, the Carrera 3.2’s driving experience is typical of the 911s of the time: manly. The absence of power steering and any other driving aids, coupled with the engine’s rear overhang, gives a real feeling of being at one with the car, even at low speeds.
The concentration and drive required to take the car on the back roads is a real pleasure to drive, always accompanied by the magical soundtrack of the flat-6, which is throaty at low revs and metallic at higher revs. The block is coupled to a gearbox that is particularly pleasant to handle (especially the G50 installed on the Carrera 3.2 from the 1986 vintage).
