It was on the initiative of Max Hoffman, Porsche’s American importer, that the Speedster version of the 356 saw the light of day in 1955. Speed-Ster, a contraction of „Speed“ and „Roadster“, the concept was to produce a minimalist sports car centered on driving pleasure. Based on the 356, the idea of the speedster was taken up a second time in 1989 with the 911 G series. The recipe was unchanged: the car was lighter, the front windscreen was lowered, and the soft top was hidden under an elegant double bubble that concealed the rear seats, which were simply eliminated.
Launched on 20 June 1989, our model was delivered new directly from the Porsche factory in Stuttgart to its first Belgian owner, who sent it to the United States to enjoy it under the American sun for many years. It returned to Europe in 2012 and is now on our premises in Valence, France. Despite all these journeys, the odometer today shows a limited mileage of 54,366 guaranteed and proven kilometers, which is exceptional. The car comes with a folder containing the stamped original service book and all the documentation that goes with it. Numerous invoices complete the file. The vehicle is registered in France, has not been involved in any accidents, has been serviced up to date, and has undergone favorable technical and car inspection.
ENGINE AND GEARBOX
The rear bonnet conceals the original 3.2-litre air-cooled flat-6 engine, which develops a satisfying 230bhp. The engine is torquey, delivering good revs without any dips in power, and is backed up by a 5-speed gearbox (the famous and coveted G50 gearbox) that offers great precision and better gear locking. The engine bay is in perfect condition and very clean, attesting to the seriousness of its use and maintenance. The service history provided shows a last service carried out in January 2018 at 51,471 kilometers by the Belgian Porsche specialist Carrera Motors, including replacement of the oil, oil filter, brake fluid, etc. An annual service may be negotiated as part of the sale.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of the speedster leaves no one indifferent thanks to a number of features, starting with the ‚camel hump‘, a double-bubble shell concealing the soft top behind the seats. The shortened windscreen lowers the vehicle’s profile, while the TLU option (turbo factory look, code M491) widens the rear track without moderation. The original Indian Red paintwork (code L80K) is in perfect condition, showing only minimal signs of wear. It has a very high gloss and uniform thickness, available on request. The underbody and wheel arches show no defects.
INTERIOR
The interior has also been redesigned to focus on the pure pleasure of driving, without going overboard. The slim, supportive seats are in perfect condition and come in an elegant light brown (code LC). The manually-operated side windows are made of soft plastic. The dashboard has not suffered from the sun and is in perfect condition, with no glove compartment. The instrumentation works perfectly. Despite all these concessions, the configuration of our example includes several important options, such as the Blaupunkt Charleston radio (code 160), air conditioning (code 559) to be modernized, and many others, available on request. No changes have been made to the interior, just as to the rest of the car.
CONSUMABLES
The Fuzion ZRi tyres, 205/55 R16 91W at the front and 245/45 R16 94W at the rear, are recent and in no need of replacement. As for the brakes, they have plenty of bite and efficiency thanks to regular servicing.
