Das Fahrzeug im Detail

For the 1974 model year, Porsche updated the 911 in order to meet global legislative requirements on safety and emissions. The 2.4-litre engine was replaced with a larger 2.7-litre unit and instead of carburettors, fuel was delivered via K-Jetronic Bosch fuel injection. The fuel injected 2.7-litre engine produced 150 or 173 horsepower for the 911 and 911S respectively.

This 911S Targa was manufactured in 1976 and sold through a Porsche dealer in Chicago, USA. The body was finished in Peru Red with a Black removable top and the interior was trimmed in Black Leatherette with the seats upholstered in leather. This car was well-optioned and according to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, it left the factory equipped with alloy wheels, cruise control, rear speakers, black trim (instead of standard chrome), a leather steering wheel, and fog lights.

The early history of this 911S Targa is not documented, but it is known that the car spent the majority of its life in the eastern part of the United States. The incumbent owner purchased this example on 6 March 2013 from its Pennsylvanian owner and exported the 911S Targa to the United Kingdom. It was first registered with the DVLA on 10 October 2013. Following the import of this vehicle, work began on a nut-and-bolt restoration. The body was acid stripped, coated with epoxy resin to prevent corrosion, and resprayed in Dolomite Grey, a 1970s Porsche colour. The “Targa” top was rebuilt and a new exterior skin applied.

The engine was stripped, inspected and thoroughly cleaned before reassembly. The oil pump was upgraded to a 3.2-litre Carrera scavenger pump, thus improving the flow of oil through the cylinder head. The main and intermediate shaft bearings were replaced, as were the piston rings. New exhaust valves and stem seals were installed, as were oil return tubes. Exhaust gasses now leave the engine through a stainless-steel manifold and Dansk high-flow exhaust. Fuel is delivered by triple Weber 40 millimetre carburettors for increased performance.

The wiring loom was restored and re-sleeved with a fire-retardant covering. All bushes, bearings, and hydraulic seals were replaced, as were the fuel lines. A genuine Porsche fuel pump was plumbed in and the braking system refreshed. Once the restoration process was completed, this 911S Targa was tuned on Northampton Motorsports’ dynamometer. There are photographs available that document the restoration from start to finish.
