Every generation of the Porsche 911 has its own enthusiasts. Of course, at Peet Classics we love the very first models, but we also recognize the attractions of the 964. Let’s tell you why, based on this very original 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet from 1991 – which now shines in our showroom.

Perhaps we can consider the Porsche 964 as the most mature evolution of the primal 911. Naturally, it has an air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine, all the way in the back. It still has those characteristic, upright headlights, as designer ‚Butzi‘ Porsche once intended. The engine makes that unparalleled raspy sound. It goes without saying that it has that typical versatility that sets the 911 apart from any other sports car. And of course, the build quality and reliability are proverbial, as we only know from Porsche.

Compared to the very first 911 (1963-1973) and the G-model that followed (1973-1989), the 964 takes the performance and sporty driving experience to a higher level. In the back of this 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet from 1991, is a 3.6 liter version of the famous air-cooled flat-six. The engine delivers 250 bhp and a smooth torque of 310 Nm. The Carrera 2 only has rear-wheel drive (after the 959, the Carrera 4 was the first production 911 with 4WD), but it is equipped with a Tiptronic transmission. It automatically adjusts its gear shifting to the driver’s driving style. Equipped with the intelligent Tiptronic transmission, you can also change gears manually in the 964 – a prelude to today’s dual-clutch transmissions.

It’s the exceptional originality that makes this 964 so special. It even stands on its original 16-inch Design ’90 wheels, which are completely free of parking damage. Only the wind deflector, the Sony radio/cassette player and the small bow spoiler on the hood, just above the automatically folding rear wing, are accessories that were retrofitted. But it is not only the originality that makes this 964 Carrera 2 Cabriolet so attractive. After the car was delivered to its first owner in Japan in 1991, everything has been documented down to the last detail. The 964 came to the Netherlands in 2016, and is still in superb condition – even though the previous owners took their time to experience the quintessential 911 first-hand.

Despite the high engine power, the improved chassis (with coil springs all around for extra stability), the folding rear wing and the modern plastic shield bumpers, the classic 911 driving experience can still be clearly experienced in this 964. This is primarily due to the design of the dashboard, with its characteristic (classic) arrangement of the instruments, the upright windscreen and the ignition switch placed on the left of the steering column. Yet you sit comfortably in the black leather-covered bucket seats; you have plenty of room for your head and legs, while the all-round view is excellent. The raspy engine noise behind your back remains traditional 911; with the dark blue Sonnenland soft top folded behind the rear seats and with the wind in your hair, the flat-six reaches your senses undamped. Power steering and ABS help the driver, airconditioning cools your head, and thanks to the updated chassis, the 964 inspires much more confidence at high speeds than its ‚weaving‘ predecessors – even if the weight of the rear engine is still a factor to keep in mind, when driving hard.

Of all 911s, the Porsche 964 could easily be the most successful combination of past and present. Everything that makes the classic models so attractive can be found in this Carrera 2 Cabriolet – but without all the obnoxious features of the classic 911s.
