Beautiful and rare Porsche 356 A (T2) Convertible D.

Just 1, 331 ‘D’ were produced between August 1958 and September 1959, making them one of the rarest ‘production’ Porsche 356. Whilst usual coachbuilders Reutter continued with their own 356 A cabriolet bodywork, they were unable to meet the demand from Porsche to build a European friendly replacement for the Speedster. And so, well respected open-top car designers Drauz of Heilbronn, South West Germany were called upon to produce an alternative.

Offering a touch more comfort and refinement than the outgoing Speedster model. It featured a taller windscreen (which was still removable for ‘race’ weekends!), wind-up windows, improved hood structure and padded seats. Porsche sales literature described the new Convertible D as “a dynamic car of beautiful proportions. Extra light and low in design for competition and pleasure driving”.

Chassis number 85875 is a matching numbers example; chassis, engine and transmission. Delivered by Rittersbacher of Kaiserlautern, in January 1959.  Fitted with a 60 bhp 1,582 cc (Type 616/1) with twin Zenith carburettors and 4 speed manual gearbox.

The vehicle in detail

Benefiting from quality restoration (with photographic documentation) finished in its original colour of  Ruby red (5702). The body presents really well, with clean lines and crisp panel gaps, whilst the chrome, hood and upholstery are also very smart. With the overhauled mechanicals, this 356 not only presents beautifully, but drives equally well too.

Having carried out a detailed inspection, our findings suggest that this 356 benefits not only from an exceptionally high quality older restoration, but that it also appears to be extraordinarily original. Body panels appear all original to this car, as do the floors, sills and jacking points, with evidence of only minor repairs. No signs of accident damage. Original doors without welding to the skins, original engine lid and trunk lid, latches and hinges and fuel tank. The wheels are date marked 10/58 and the electrics remain as 6 volts.

Our in-house 356 guru Graham Kidd has worked on and inspected this 356; he rates it highly.

This 356 has lasting quality and beauty. It is a piece of automotive art that could take you on long distance tours and would be welcome at any event.
