Porsche 356 BT5 1600 Roadster 1961 – D’Ieteren – Superb condition – Rare example – 12-month warranty

This Porsche 356 1600 BT5 D’Ieteren (#89233) left the Belgian factory production line on July 18th, 1961. Only 473 BT5 examples were produced by D’Ieteren, and only in 1961 (the 1959 and 1960 roadsters were built by Drauz, 2,200 units). Even at the time, journalists and specialists noted that D’Ieteren roadsters were better insulated and more rigid than Drauz roadsters, making them particularly sought after by collectors in today’s market.

The vehicle in detail

Our Porsche 356 was delivered to Jacksonville, USA, to Brumos dealerships on September 15th, 1961, to Mr. Spencer Willoughly from Augusta – the original Kardex states that it was delivered with a factory roll bar allowing for competition use.

Its original color was Fjord Green (#6005), which it retained until 2008.

During its 43 years in the USA, records on the US 356 Registry show 6 American owners, including one – US Air Force Commander John Boles – who owned this roadster twice, 30 years apart. He kept the roadster from 2003 to 2014 and undertook a full restoration:

  • Interior and soft top (2003)
  • Bodywork (2008)
  • Complete mechanical restoration (2011 by Till’s Import Car Clinic)

In 2014, the car was purchased by a Belgian collector who imported it from the United States. It was then brought up to European specifications, serviced, and improved by Porsche Van Beurden in Turnhout.

In September 2018, it was acquired by its current French owner.

Since 2018, the roadster has been regularly driven and carefully maintained (invoice file), stored in a heated, secure garage under a cover. It is currently registered in France with a “carte grise collection” (classic registration). The car also comes with a 2019 FIVA passport, number 078534.

Mechanical condition:
The body is in very good overall condition, with bright, flawless Polar Grey paint and good panel fit.
Paint thickness readings are between 356 and 409 microns (uniform, high-quality repaint).
Mechanically, the engine was restored in 2011. It is of the correct 616/1 type (year and model) but is not the original engine (difference of 1,307 numbers between the two).

  • Original engine (Kardex): P-605161
  • Current engine: P-606468
The 714/2 gearbox is matching (#42935) with 4 speeds.
The engine runs smoothly, works perfectly, does not consume oil, and produces no unusual noises or knocks. It develops 90 hp on the dyno. No oil leaks or seepage from the engine or gearbox.
    6-volt battery.
Wheels with dated chrome rims, chrome hubcaps, and 4 brand-new Dunlop Sport Blu Response 185/65 R15 88H tires.

Cosmetic & interior condition:
Blue leather seats, restored without alteration.
All carpeting in very good condition, restored, with Cocomat overmats.
Lap seat belts.
Ashtray (option).
Le Leston wood steering wheel in superb condition.
Fire extinguisher.
Dark blue mohair soft top, nearly new.
Full and fully functioning instrumentation, including Blaupunkt Frankfurt radio.
Odometer in kilometers (88,500 km).
In the front trunk: spare wheel, tool kit, original jack, tonneau cover, and soft top cover.

Underside & structure:
On a lift, the underside is healthy, with no sign of impacts or corrosion, featuring bituminous anti-gravel protection.
Shock absorbers are recent and in good condition.
Brakes are disc type from the 356 SC, with aviation-type hoses, and are very effective in use.
