The vehicle in detail

Sold new to John Austin of Garden City, Kansas this 911 E was perfectly finished in Tangerine with a black vinyl interior. The factory service booklet documents a service at 5,659 miles in mid 1972, confirming the cars occasional use. A Conoco oil change record from December of ’72 shows a total of 8,601 miles.

In 1998, the car was purchased by Jim Hoagland from Weldon Scrogham who had recently acquired the car from a well known collector. Though it has not been verified, the collector was purportedly Frank Gallogly who also owned the Steve McQueen 911S and 917K. At the time of purchase, the car had just 14,097 miles on it. Hoagland eventually sold the 911 to a gentleman in New Jersey, then with roughly 15,600 miles on it.

By 2008 the car was acquired by another New Jersey based collector who entrusted the car to the Paterek brothers for a careful recommissioning and preservation work after which mechanical work was also carried out by Autohaus. The car was minimally used, and maintained in a collection of other very highly original post-war sports cars.

In 2020, the owner undertook further recommissioning and mechanical restoration of the 911 by Graham Engineering and Motorsport. The Porsche subsequently received significant attention to virtually every operating system, including an engine case reseal, partial gearbox rebuild, new wheel cylinders, shocks, etc. This no-expense spared re-commissioning is fully documented by invoices and photos. Even the ventilation system was serviced and all passenger compartment seals were tested with a smoke machine and replaced as needed. The level of detail is impressive, as was the expense.

Purchased in October of 2024, with 17,351 original miles, another 1,000 miles has been added to the 911 and a subsequent $3,400 in minor service work, which includes new tires and a wheel alignment. In total, the 911 has received roughly $80,000 worth of detailed service work and attention since 2008.

Today, this Tangerine 911 E remains a highly original example with mostly original paint and an entirely original interior. The underside, front compartment and engine bay are all largely original and exceptionally tidy. While the car has rock chips and some minor imperfections, it truly is one of the best original 911s we’ve had and certainly among the lowest mileage anywhere. The car is further complete with its original manual and service book, toolkit, and binder of service receipts. Best of all, the car drives like new.

A numbers-matching example, this 911 E is desirable both as a first year fuel-injected variant but also as an original paint Tangerine car. Given its exceptionally low mileage, fantastic original condition, and the high degree to which it was serviced and maintained once would be hard pressed to find a nicer early 911 on the market today.
