The vehicle in detail

History:
Porsche introduced the 911 Targa at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 1965. The Targa is neither a Cabriolet nor a Coupe, neither a hard top nor a saloon, but something completely new: the first safety cabriolet in the world with a fixed safety or roll bar.

The 911 Targa was first offered with a so called soft window, which was a removable vinyl top with a plastic window. Starting with the introduction of the longer wheel base for model year 1969, Porsche offered a fixed glass rear window as standard, but the soft window remained an option. Very few people decided on the soft window option after 1969, hence, the soft window Targa is extremely rare to find in the longer wheel base cars.

While no official production numbers exist, knowledgeable sources and 911 aficionados are speaking about 17 (sometimes 19) examples for model year 1969 and 3 for 1970 and one more in 1971. While this can’t be confirmed 100%, it is safe to say, that any long wheel base Softie is super rare find.

This car:

Our car on offer is a fully restored and numbers matching 1970 2.2l E soft window Targa from Austria. It is thought to be one of only 3 existing 1970 2,2l Softies and it is an E, which makes it even more special!

Despite the lower maximum power output of the 911E compared to the 911S, the 911E was quicker during acceleration up to 160 km/h (99 mph), because the higher torque in the high rpm range of 911S was not enough to offset the higher torque in the low/mid rpm range of the 911E. Porsche factory teams used the 911E in rally events, where a wide power band is more advantageous, and the 911E was called the “Secret weapon from Zuffenhausen”.

Finished in gorgeous Gemini metallic blue (8610) over black hounds tooth seats, the car is truly an amazing sight.

The nut and bolt restoration was executed a number of years ago and the owner decided at that point to have the exterior and interior colors changed to his personal preference. The car was originally bahia red over black. The drivetrain is numbers matching and fully restored.

This 911 E Targa is now nicely sorted with about 3600km (2250 miles) on it and it runs and drives perfect. It has a few imperfections and light scratches from use as it is driven and enjoyed in fair weather. It comes with a number of extra parts, spare wheel and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of a handful long wheel base 911 Soft window Targa’s ever produced!
