Porsche 911S Targa Safari. Excuse me? A Targa? That's right!!! A Targa. And one that can really perform. Not just one for cruising around town – okay, it can do that too. But it can also really take a beating. It doesn't just pretend. It's really capable. I'll start slowly and then I'm looking forward to your feedback. If it were easy, everyone would do it... Exactly!!!

So here we go – one of everything, please: a 1977 Porsche 911 S Targa. It had matching numbers. Now it has a 3.6-liter M64/01 engine and therefore no longer has matching numbers. Sorry, but we couldn't compromise on that. Completely overhauled and now like new, this engine was docked onto the reinforced, original 5-speed 915/61 transmission. By the way: we got the engine from Thomas Fischer (FSR Sportauto), who also reworked and reinforced the transmission for us. It couldn't be better!

The vehicle in detail

Chronology of work and specifications. I have also included some pictures for the following points.

  • Complete dismantling of the car down to the bare body shell for inventory and to carry out the necessary bodywork
  • All screws, nuts, washers, and many other small parts were collected, inspected, and, if suitable, cleaned and re-galvanized or yellow-galvanized at a specialist company.
  • The body was then taken to Wiechers (a great company, RIP), where a cage made of Chromo 4 steel was custom-made for the car and fitted perfectly. The cage runs through the entire body, from the rear to the front shock absorber mounts, to which it is also welded. It is designed in such a way that the function of the targa roof is not impaired in any way. In addition, the Wiechers experts welded in further body reinforcements and rewelded important areas of the body. We used addendum 15/4E of FIA homologation no. 3053 for the 1973 Carrera RS as a guideline.

  • Then the chassis, based on Bilstein dampers and components from the 991 GT3, was adapted to the body, including the necessary minor bodywork. It was important to me to change the line of the body as little as possible. I'm not a fan of these overly wide Safaris armed with oversized tires.
  • The paintwork was done in Porsche's Stone Gray 5710 color. This was first offered in 1957 as a special color for the 356.
  • In the meantime, the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt and tuned to each other.
  • It has a stainless steel exhaust system including manifold and functioning heater. Thanks to Albert Motorsport for the mega sound.

Now we'll continue in bullet points, otherwise there won't be enough space :-)))))

  • Cargraphic complete brake system in Turbo Dimension with red brake calipers including Safari logo
  • I found aluminum wheels with a steel rim look at Group4Wheels in the UK
  • Overhaul of the targa roof and covering with original Sonnenland fabric
  • Refurbishment of the stainless steel Targa bar cover and restoration of the factory surface structure by a specialist company
  • Installation of an electric 2-ton winch for emergencies
  • LED headlights and LED taillights
  • Rennline gearshift – making the 915 transmission fun again
  • Additional Rennline parts are installed in the interior (control lever, heater cover, fire extinguisher holder for the fire extinguisher painted in the car color, cell phone holder, cup holder).
  • Sports seats from DP Motorsport and special seat consoles – so even I (197 cm) fit comfortably in the 911 and have plenty of headroom.

There are many more details – too many to list here. But one more thing – the Targa is more torsion-resistant than many coupes will ever be. This means you can drive it off-road, legally. We built the car from the ground up in close consultation with the TÜV test engineer and incorporated his recommendations. Everything is registered without any tricks and can therefore be driven on public roads. We are happy to answer any questions. Please just send us an email.
