The vehicle in detail

When Porsche debuted the 991.1 GT3 in 2014, it was a huge leap forward for the marque in terms of performance and usability. But one thing it lacked was the option for a manual gearbox- Porsche determined that as the track-focused model in the 911 lineup, the paddle-shifted PDK was the only gearbox the GT3 needed, as it would result in better lap times. Many enthusiasts weren’t pleased with this decision as the outgoing 997 GT3 was equipped with one of the best manual gearboxes put in any road car. In hearing this complaint from Porsche collectors worldwide, it was decided that a limited run of 911s would be equipped with the GT3 RS powertrain and chassis and have a 6-speed manual transmission. Only offered to the most dedicated collectors, the 911 R became the most sought-after 911 overnight and with just 991 units produced, values of the rare car skyrocketed.

This 2016 Porsche 911 R is a particularly special example, given that it shows just 11 miles on the odometer and has barely been driven since its delivery. Sold new at Porsche of Plano, Texas, this 911 R is finished in Paint to Sample Racing Yellow, with black Porsche graphics down the bottom of the doors. The 911 R weighs 110 lbs less than its GT3 RS sibling, and this is largely due to the removal of air vents and fixed rear wing. In its place, more subdued bodywork and a conventional electronic wing hint at the less track-focused nature of this 911.

The interior is finished in black leather with black and silver houndstooth fabric inserts on the fixed bucket seats. There is black leather encasing the dash, door cards, steering column casing, and steering wheel, which is all accented with GT Silver stitching- the GT Silver trim continues with the fabric door pulls in the same color as the stitching. Gloss carbon fiber trim is found on the dashboard and kick plates, and sitting just in front of the passenger is a special brushed aluminum plaque, which denotes this car as number 919/991. From the factory, this car was ordered with a number of other desirable options like a front axle lift system, Bose surround sound, and Sport Chrono package with lap timer preparation.

Powering the 911 R is 4.0-liter Flat-6 which is rated at 500 horsepower and 338 lb-ft of torque. What really got enthusiasts excited about the 911 R, though, is the 6-speed manual gearbox and optional single mass flywheel. A $3,650 option, the “Single-Mass Flywheel with Reinforced Clutch” makes the R rev like a race car, meaning that every pull to the 8,500 rpm redline happens in the blink of an eye, while also transmitting more vibration into the cabin, which makes every drive feel like an event. Many enthusiasts opted for the standard clutch and flywheel combination as it is easier to just get in and drive, but once you drive a car with the single-mass flywheel, you won’t want to go back, and values show that.

The 911 R is one of the most special 911 models to come out of Porsche in the past decade and with news that the next generation GT3 may be moving towards hybridization, it is a car that will forever stay desirable. Given this car’s paint-to-sample Racing Yellow finish, a suite of desirable options, and ultra-low delivery mileage, this is a car to hold on to for decades to come.
