Porsche 911 S

Highlights

  • VIN: 9330300085
  • Conda Green
  • Matching Numbers

This particular Porsche 911S was ordered new by Kirk W. Gober of 261 Campo Drive, Long Beach, California. Gober ordered the car new through Porsche-Audi of Downtown L.A. sometime in September or October of 1969, requesting a normal “North American Market” version in “Conda Green” with black interior. He chose not to have a radio fitted either by the Factory or the selling dealer and also chose to have no sunroof fitted. This is sequentially the 85th of 1,744 units completed for the 1970 model year. There is some debate but it appears the first production 1970 model was chassis number 911300011, making this either the 74th or possibly the 85th example completed. In any case, it was a very early example as further evidenced by the California “Blue & Yellow” plates “418 BJZ” it was issued with new. These plates would have been issued by the California DMV sometime in January or early February of 1970 further confirming the time of new delivery to Mr. Gober.

The vehicle in detail

No much is known about Mr. Gober other than he was born in 1939 in Compton, California. At the time of his purchase Gober lived on Long Beach, California’s prestigious Naples Island, an upscale water front pocket community noted for its “Million Dollar” mansions even in the 1970s when a million dollars meant much more than it does today. Even today the average price of cottages on the island easily run over $2M each.

Gober was just 30 yeas old when he took delivery of his new Porsche 911S. We know only a few details, mainly that he was a life-long police officer in the City of Los Angles and that he was injured in the line of duty and retired in 1988, passing away in 1991. Detective Gober serviced his Porsche regularly at Porsche-Audi of Downtown L.A., the same dealership from which he purchased it. He also apparently enjoyed the car and drove it frequently as a service record from May 13th, 1976 not only confirms the original California plates, but that he had already covered 66,268 miles after just six years of ownership. In 1988, The last year the car was registered for the road, total mileage was now showing just shy of 15,000 miles, indicating total actual mileage of 115,000 miles.

Tragically, sometime in 1988, Detective Gober was injured in the line of duty which forced him into retirement. Unable to enjoy his prized Porsche, he stored the car until passing away in 1991. Upon his death, the car was inherited by his Son and Daughter. They continued to store the car until 2015 when they made the decision in honor of their father to have it completely restored. While remaining remarkably original after 27 years of storage, their family’s prized Porsche was in need of a complete and total restoration. The work was undertaken by Elite Restoration in Paramount, California. From June 2015 until September of 2017, direct restoration invoices from Elite Restoration exceeded $190,000. An additional $40,000 in parts and sublet work was also paid for before the family came to the decision, they were completely over their heads and hopelessly underwater having invested more than $230,000 to date.

In an attempt to stop the hemorrhaging of cash, Gober’s Son and Daughter agreed to sell the car to Porsche specialists, European Collectibles in Costa Mesa, California. European Collectibles completed necessary services and further restoration work and shortly thereafter, in March of 2018 sold this 911S to noted La Jolla attorney, Sheldon Ostroff. This was Ostroff’s first foray into a classic and collectible automobile and it did not go as well as he had hoped.

Over the next two years, Ostroff with the assistance of John Miller further improved, sorted and had this Porsche completely dialed in and concours prepared. Receipts in excess of $10,000 document their efforts to truly make this rare Porsche perfect in all regards. To that end, John Miller was able to source an extremely rare, never used original SIGLA front windshield to replace the aftermarket one installed during the previous restoration. The steering wheel was fully restored and correctly recovered. Wayne Baker’s Personalized Autohaus in San Diego was commissioned to fully restore the fuel tanks and fuel tank system. Miller also had the engine fan and shroud sent out to a specialist in Orange County for correct refinishing and restoration to original appearance. This took more than three months to complete but finally returned the engine compartment back to as it appeared when new in 1970. Additional work was finally completed in the June of 2020, but unfortunately, Ostroff was not enamored by his new Porsche and instead consigned the car back to European Collectibles for sale. In August of 2020, this Porsche was purchased by a prominent Seattle, Washington based collector. The car then joined their vast holdings only to remain un-driven during his short ownership.

Early this month, the owner contacted our company stating that he had never driven the car or registered it and wanted to know if we wanted to buy it. We immediately took advantage of the situation and purchased this very special Porsche.

Today this Porsche remains completely matching numbers and totally accident and rust free having received nearly $250,000 in direct restoration expenses. Total mileage is 115,347 miles from new, but only just over 100 miles has been added since the completion of all work.

Finished now as when new in the original desirable factory color combination Conda Green, with Black leatherette interior. The paintwork is in beautiful condition with excellent gaps and panel fit. The interior has been completely re-upholstered in the correct German black leatherette on all seats, dash and door panels, perfect functioning door pockets, new headliner, leather-wrapped steering wheels with butterfly horn ring, restored gauges, black German Haargarn carpets, complemented with checkered green and black CoCo mats. The deep 6″ Fuch alloy rims have been restored and fitted with original period correct,Pirelli Cinturato CN36 185/70 VR 15 tires. The floor pans and front suspension are original and rust-free. Complete with Certificate of Authenticity confirming matching numbers, records of the restoration, original owner’s manual, tool kit, jack and spare Fuch alloy rim. Mechanically, this 2.2-liter engine with 180HP, runs phenomenal with plenty of horsepower, smooth shifting manual 901-dogleg 5-speed transmission, and four-wheel disc brakes.

With single family ownership for 47 years and almost no use since being fully and correctly restored, it would be near impossible to find another example as nice as this particular 911S.
