The vehicle in detail

As one of the longest-lived sports cars in automotive history, part of the Porsche 911’s enduring appeal is its link to the past and adherence to tradition. But while it has stayed true to the concepts that made the original 911 such a success—most notably the rear-mounted positioning of its powerplant—the model has been in a constant state of evolution from the moment the first examples left the gates of Zuffenhausen.
Incremental improvements were made to earlier generations of 911, from brake upgrades to a lengthened wheelbase, yet one of the most significant changes arrived in 1972. The venerable air-cooled flat-six was subject to an increase in capacity to 2,341 cubic centimetres allied to Bosch mechanical fuel injection, increasing total output to 187 horsepower for the top-of-the-range 911 S. Subtle changes to weight distribution improved balance, while a purposeful chin spoiler contributed to better aerodynamic characteristics at high speed.
The 911 S offered here was sold new in Germany, delivered via Shulz Düsseldorf on 28 March 1972 as one of only 1,750 examples made for its model year. While little is known of its earlier history, the Porsche is documented to have been registered in the United Kingdom in June 2007, where it wore the registration “GVG388K” and was domiciled in Suffolk. Its stay on England did not last long as by September 2008 it was sold at auction. Shortly afterwards it is believed to have been exported to Kuwait to join The 20th Century Collection.

Wearing attractive yellow paintwork over a desirable part-leather houndstooth interior, this attractively specified 911 S retains its matching-numbers engine. Presenting in a condition that suggests an older restoration—believed to have been completed around the early 2000s—the Porsche will need further recommissioning prior to returning to the road, having been stood on static display during its time in the Middle East. This desirable E-series 911 S 2.4 Coupé would be the perfect entry to classic Porsche ownership, and an ideal platform for its next owner to complete any further restoration work to their exacting wishes.
