1972 Porsche 911T Targa for sale!

Original European Market Targa, Recently Nicely Restored and Finished in Light Yellow Over A Black/Pepita Interior and Fitted With Sport Seats.

Named after the famed Italian road race the Targa Florio, the Porsche 911 Targa was the brand’s solution to increasing American safety legislation that was expected to ban full convertible cars. Easily identified by its stainless steel roll hoop and deviated color roof panel, the Targa first went on sale in 1967 and has become one of the most iconic 911 variants. For 1972, Porsche offered the 911 in 3 different states of tune- the 911T, 911E, and 911S- all of which were based around a similar flat-6 engine, but with different camshafts and fueling systems based on how much power they wanted the car to make. 1972 is one of the most desirable years for classic 911s as it features the coveted outside oil fill cap that sits just beneath a gas cap-style flap, on the right side rear quarter panel. Implemented to mimic the oil filler on the 911R race car, this unique design element was only produced for one year and has become quite sought after by collectors.

The vehicle in detail

Produced in 1972, this 911T Targa was originally sold in Europe but imported to the United States in 1989. Recently it has been the subject of a multi-year restoration to bring it back to showroom specification. Finished in a period correct shade of Light Yellow, the car was resprayed during the restoration using single-stage paint, as it would have come from the factory. This car is fitted with a number of period upgrades including a 911S front spoiler which fills out the front view of the car very nicely and adds high-speed stability. 1972 also marked the year that Porsche changed the chrome exterior trim to black, meaning that the rear engine grille as well as the grilles in front have a very attractive black anodized finish.

The interior is classic 911- featuring 5 large gauges, the controls you need to use the car, and little else. A set of period-correct sports seats have been installed in front with improved bolstering and striking Pepita inserts which are surrounded by black vinyl. The steering wheel has been replaced with a Momo Prototipo for an improved steering feel and an original style 911S 380mm Sport wheel is also included. The only non-essential item present in the interior is a Blaupunkt radio that sits in the center of the dashboard.

Sitting in the rear of the car is an air-cooled Flat-6, which for the first time in 1972, displaced 2.4 liters. As this is a 911T, the fueling was controlled by a pair of triple-choke carburetors which helped the car make 130 horsepower. With the introduction of the more powerful 2.4 engines, Porsche also elected to make a change to the gearbox- gone was the 901 transmission with its dog-leg first gear, and in its place, the 915 5-speed with a conventional shift pattern, which was used in 911s until 1987.

Thanks to its beautiful looks, superior driving dynamics, and some one-year-only touches, the 1972 911 is a car that all Porsche enthusiasts hold near and dear. Thanks to this example’s comprehensive 3-year restoration and appealing color combination, it is sure to be both a joy to drive and a pleasure to own for years to come.
