In September 1963, the first Porsche 911 F model was presented for the first time at the “IAA” trade fair in Frankfurt. Today the F model is considered the epitome of sports car construction in Germany, but at the time the successor to the Porsche 356 was not very popular among Porsche fans. If the press and racing fans had their way, the “new one” was too big, too comfortable and too heavy. Porsche was also not able to keep the name of the first F model (901) for long, because the automobile manufacturer “Peugeot” secured the rights to all three-digit model names with a zero in the middle before the first “901” from Porsche rolled off the assembly line . Porsche therefore had to change the model name of the first F model from 901 to the now well-known name “911”. In retrospect, lucky for Porsche!
