The vehicle in detail

It makes sense why so many enthusiasts deem the Porsche 911 the ultimate classic car. Thanks to its unique and exciting driving dynamics, outstanding build quality, and legendary reliability, classic 911 ownership sidesteps many of the pitfalls usually associated with having an old car in your garage. With nearly 60 years of continuous production, selecting the proper classic 911 can be daunting- but without a doubt, one of the most sought-after generations is the long wheelbase, short bumper cars built between 1969 and 1973. Although the earlier short-wheelbase cars are known for their lively handling and revvy small displacement motors, the long-wheelbase cars are far more refined and much better all-around vehicles. With both crash and emissions regulations looming over the 911, a redesign was set to be launched for the 1974 model year with impact bumpers and larger, lower compression engines. But for a brief moment, Porsche integrated some of the new technology – Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injection- into the classic small bumper body, in a car known as the 1973.5 911T.

This 1973.5 911T is a beautiful example, finished in its original shade of Aubergine over a black vinyl interior. It is believed that this car has not undergone a comprehensive restoration but was the subject of a respray in the 1980s, which was done to a very high standard and has aged gracefully over the last 40-odd years. Sitting on a set of 15” Fuchs forged 5-spoke wheels, this car has all of the visuals you would want in a short-bumper 911 including a single flag mirror on the driver’s door and chrome exterior trim.

The interior is classic 911 and wonderfully simple but this example does benefit from a number of nice optional extras from the period.

The black vinyl comfort seats are fitted with headrests and are in good condition but do show some wear, as does the white headliner, which has a few areas of becoming detached behind the driver’s seat. This 911T was fitted from the factory with air conditioning which is a very desirable option on 911s of this era, and it works- cooling the car well for a system of this age. A period correct Blaupunkt head unit is integrated in the dashboard and features a single speaker, mounted centrally in the dashboard.

Powering this 911 is a 2.4-liter air cooled flat-6, with the unique Bosch K-Jetronic CIS system, which was only available in this bodystyle for half of a year. The engine is believed to be numbers matching and the engine bay presents nicely. Not overly done-up like you may find in a fully restored car, but clean and clearly well cared for over the last 50 years. The engine runs well and pulls strongly, and when paired with the 5-speed 915 transaxle, it provides an enjoyable, lively driving experience. Mechanically, the car checks out in good condition but does show some minor leaks on both the engine and gearbox-which are to be expected in an air cooled 911 of this age.

In the world of classic 911s, rarity factors into nearly every conversation and it is believed that less than 1,950 of these 1973.5 911Ts were produced, making it a truly uncommon car. As one of the final small bumper 911s produced, this 911T benefits from all the updates done to the chassis over its production run, and presents in very nice, honest condition throughout. Whether you are looking for a stock weekend driver or the basis for a restoration or outlaw project, this 911T is a fantastic starting point.
