When the Porsche 911 first went on sale in 1964, it was built alongside the existing 4-cylinder 356 through 1965. As the 356 production came to a close, Porsche executives realized that the 6-cylinder 911 which was supposed to be the 356 successor, was significantly more expensive than the outgoing car, and it might be beneficial to offer a second model, more in-line with the 356. Utilizing a revised flat-4 engine and repurposing essentially everything else from its 6-cylinder 911 brother, the 912 was born. As the 911 was already a lightweight car, the two fewer cylinders in the 912 didn’t really hurt performance, and thanks to the slippery shape, fuel economy was quite remarkable for the time. Although some enthusiasts these days critique the 912 for its low power and less inspiring engine note, the truth is that because of the smaller engine, the 912 is more like a mid-engined car and has fantastic, neutral handling- which is not something that can be said for short wheelbase 911s.
This 1966 Porsche 912 was sold new on August 15th, 1966, at A.J. Pierson Sales and Service in Orlando, Florida, with an out-the-door price of $5,739.44. Originally finished in Gulf Blue, this 912 was refinished in Polo Red yet otherwise remains very original throughout. One thing that can’t be replicated and sets this car apart from most classics of this generation is a binder with a paper trail dating back to the receipt from the selling dealer in 1966 up to the current day. This example was acquired by the current owner in 2020 and has undergone significant mechanical freshening, with receipts for over $28,000 spent in 2023 to get it dialed in. Under current ownership, this 912 was featured on the lawn at the prestigious The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering in 2022. The exterior of the vehicle looks fantastic, with the Polo Red paint paired with steel wheels and chrome hubcaps, and a white and black Porsche script decal along the sills. Up front, a set of fog lights and a covered set of Cibie spotlights have been installed.
The interior combines black vinyl with unique white vinyl door cards and has received some fantastic upgrades in recent years. When the current owner purchased the car, a modern Pioneer head unit was fitted in the dashboard’s center, which just looked wrong. To address this, the head unit was removed, and in its place, a pair of Cletimer and Sportex (a Heuer subsidiary) stopwatches were fitted on a brushed aluminum plate that matches the dash nicely. A 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel frames the 356-inspired 3 gauge dashboard, made up of a speedometer, tach, and split fuel/oil temperature gauge. Coco Mats in black/white are fitted on the floors, and 4-point seat belts have been installed for the two front seats.
Powering this 912 is a 1,600cc air cooled flat-4 which produces an estimated 90 horsepower, that is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine was completely rebuilt in 2001 and the gearbox has received a recent overhaul to ensure it functions properly. As it stands, the car runs and drives extremely well and the inspection report shows only minor seepage on the engine which is remarkable for a car of this age.
If you are interested in experiencing a 912, this car is an excellent example and is ready to be pressed into use immediately. Not only does this car look and drive very nicely, but the fact that it comes with an unbroken service history dating back to when it was new makes it essentially unreplicatable and a true collector-grade example.
