In the mid-1960s, Porsche faced the challenge of replacing the technically outdated Porsche 356. The Porsche 911 was introduced in 1963, but with its new 6-cylinder boxer engine it was relatively expensive and not affordable for all customers. Porsche then developed the 912 as a cheaper alternative and introduced it to the market with great success. The model was produced between 1965 and 1969 in Targa and Coupé versions. Externally, the 912 is almost identical to the 911, but has a smaller engine and a simpler interior with less chrome.
