To fill the price segment still uncovered between the 356 still in production and the 911, porsche launched the 912 model on the market in 1965, a cheaper and at the same time much less powerful version of the 911, aesthetically and technically almost identical.
In the rear, the traction was entrusted to the 1.6-liter four-cylinder boxer engine of the 356 SC. For the purpose of being used on the 912, the power was reduced from 95 to 90 hp to 5,800 rpm, to achieve more recovery and greater stability. Transmission with 4-speed manual transmission.
Compared to its older sister, the 912 retained the coupe body (since 1966 also Targa) and the entire mechanics, with the exception of the engine, which here is an air-cooled 4-cylinder boxer of 1584 cm³ of the last Porsche 356 SC. The performance was decidedly modest, but the low consumption offset the more spartan motorization. Simplified compared to the 911, even the interior.
Due to its substantial aesthetic identity with its 6-cylinder older sister and significantly lower list price, the 912 enjoyed great commercial success, especially in the United States. Its production ceased at the end of 1969 to make way for the 914, although in 1976 a small series of 912 E was produced for the North American market with a 2-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine (of Volkswagen origin) with an injection of 86 hp.
