Porsche 912 was intended to bridge the gap between the 356 and the 911. If one couldn’t afford the new 911 with its powerful 6-cylinder engine, they could still enjoy the same styling, quality, and driving pleasure by opting for a 912, essentially a 911 but with the 4-cylinder engine from the 356. The 912 had significantly better weight distribution than the 911 and was 125 kg lighter! Therefore, there was no substantial difference in their performance. The improved 90 horsepower engine from the 356 was so popular that the 912 outsold the 911 for a long period, even though the price difference was relatively small. The 912 continued in production until 1969, when the new “price leader” 914 took over.
