Porsche discontinued the production of the Type 356 C in 1965. With the model changeover from the Type 356 to the Porsche 911, the entry-level price for new car customers rose from 16.450 DM to 22.900 DM.
Porsche needed an additional model with the new body at a lower entry-level price compared to the 6-cylinder model. This was the opportunity for the Type 912. Initially intended for the European market the 912 became a bestseller in the USA in particular and remained there until the end of 1968 before the Porsche 911-T-2.0 ousted it from the market.
