1970 Porsche 914-6 IMSA GTU

A highly developed and period-campaigned example of the Porsche 914-6, this 1970 chassis represents an authentic and competitive entrant from one of the most exciting eras of North American sports car racing. Campaigned in IMSA GTU competition and Canada’s MolySlip Endurance Championship throughout the 1970s, this car embodies the ingenuity and underdog spirit that defined the platform’s racing success. Most notably, this example competed in the 12 Hours of Sebring four consecutive times between 1979 and 1982. In the 1979 running, the car achieved an impressive 23rd overall finish and 7th in GTU class, an extraordinary result given the dominance of factory-backed machinery. It notably finished ahead of icons such as Hurley Haywood and John Paul Sr. in their formidable Porsche 935 entries, cementing its place as a giant-killer among far more powerful competitors.

The vehicle in detail

Period race entries under the Alps Restoration banner, along with archival imagery from Mosport, further establish the car’s active and well-documented competition history. Research via period race records tied to chassis #914 043 0188 confirms extensive participation during its original racing life.

Between 2015 and 2016, the car was comprehensively restored by marque specialist Frank Beck of Beck’s European. The restoration was executed with dual purpose: preserving historical authenticity while ensuring competitiveness in modern vintage racing.

Following completion, the car returned to active competition in premier historic series including Historic Sportscar Racing and Sportscar Vintage Racing Association. Under the stewardship of enthusiast driver James Cullen, the car was regularly campaigned at circuits such as Road America, Daytona International Speedway, and Watkins Glen International, often delivering strong finishes.

At its core lies a highly developed 2.5-liter flat-six engine, the case being derived from a 1967 2.0L 911, featuring twin-plug heads, PMO carburetors, and ITG filtration. Supporting systems include MSD ignition, an Accusump oiling system, headers, and a fuel cell. Power is transmitted through a 915 transaxle with adapted side mounted shifter, with shortened gearing.

The Porsche 914-6 GTU stands as one of Porsche’s most effective and innovative competition platforms of the early 1970s. With lightweight construction, mid-engine balance, and extensive racing development, the model achieved significant success, including class victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuinely campaigned IMSA GTU car with documented period racing history, 4 time 12 Hours Sebring entry, and a proven record in modern vintage competition. Combining authentic provenance, competitive preparation, and eligibility for premier historic events, this 914-6 represents an exceptional entry point into serious vintage racing.
