Commissioned by Ferdinand Porsche to create a production-ready concept for a new model, Ernst Fuhrmann began a design study in 1971 that ultimately gave birth to the Porsche 928. This was the company’s first true clean-sheet design—unlike its predecessors, which evolved from earlier collaborations or adaptations. The 356 shared roots with the Volkswagen Beetle, the 911 evolved from the 356, the 914 was a joint venture with Volkswagen intended to replace the Karmann Ghia and 912, and the 924 originated from a shelved Volkswagen-Audi project. For the 928, Porsche engineers pursued a high-displacement powerplant, and early prototypes featured a 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 300 PS (220 kW; 300 hp).
Engine 5.4 L M28/49–V8, This 1993 Porsche 928 GTS was originally built for the European market and first delivered to Italy before being acquired by Hedon Motors. Finished in Polar Silver Metallic (L92E) over a black leather interior with supple leather seating (option 980), it features Porsche’s 5.4-liter V8 engine paired with a five-speed manual transaxle and limited-slip differential.
According to the included build documentation, this example served as an exhibition vehicle and was uniquely specified without a sunroof. Factory equipment includes 17-inch Cup 1 wheels, sport shocks, power-adjustable front sport seats, pop-up headlights, a CD stereo, and air conditioning. GTS-specific details consist of a body-colored rear spoiler, Cup-style mirrors, GTS badging, a twin exhaust outlet, and a red reflective panel between the taillights. Of the 41 exhibition 928 GTS models produced, only 7 were built without a sunroof, making this a particularly rare and desirable collector example. The car was imported and titled in North Carolina in July 2023.
