The vehicle in detail

1976 PORSCHE 911 ‘TYP 934’ TURBO RSR
Chassis No. 0060022

It’s safe to assume that most reading the description for this 1976 Porsche ‘Typ 934’ Turbo RSR know what a 911 Turbo is. There are certainly enough of them out there! In fact, it’s estimated that worldwide air-cooled turbo production crested 30,000 by the end of 1998 – however the most interesting of these are the first 911 Turbo examples. To homologate the Typ 934, Porsche’s first turbocharged, production-based racing car, for FIA Group 4 endurance racing, the Stuttgart manufacturer was required to build 400 911 Turbo street cars. Not simply a highly successful race car in the European GT Championship, SCCA Trans-Am, and the classic endurance races, the Typ 934 is also the starting point for every single 911 Turbo variant on the road today!

As well as “Porsche” and “Turbo” go together, the same can be said for Porsche and the Kremer Brothers. Founded in Cologne, Germany in 1962 Manfred and Erwin Kremer hit their stride in the late 60s and early 70s with class victories at the Spa 24 Hours and Le Mans 24 Hours – always in GT-class Porsche 911s. When Porsche became recommitted to customer-based GT racing, the Kremer brothers jumped in with both feet for the 1976 racing season ordering two new 934s and two 934 replacement bodies. After a hard season’s racing, Kremer had this car, chassis number 0060022 built as their 934 to be entered in races throughout the 1977 season. It is said that Kremer’s number one driver, Frenchman Bob Wollek, found something he did not like in the 934 he raced throughout 1976 and requested the change for 1977. Once finished, it was issued its ONS-Wagenpass (Register Number 4/7129/77) on 28 February 1977 and was quickly pressed into action at the ‘Jim-Clark-Rennen’ at the Hockenheimring on 17 April 1977. Liveried in Valliant green and driven by Wollek, 0060022 won on its first outing with successive drives at Kassel-Calden, the Mainz-Finthen Flugplatz, and an RMSC Rundstreckenrennen race recorded in its ONS-Wagenpass.

Each of the aforementioned races would serve as a warmup for this 934’s crowning achievement at the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours. Porsche-Kremer Racing entered two Porsches at Le Mans that year – a 935 in Group 5 in addition to this 934 (start number 58) with the intent to have Wollek share driving duties in both! By race day cooler heads prevailed and it was decided Wollek would solely focus on the 934. Finished in its iconic white and blue Burton of London pinstripe suit livery, this eye-catching 934 more than showed its front running potential as the fastest Group 4 qualifier, landing 17th on the grid. After 24 hours and 299 laps of the Circuit de la Sarthe, chassis number 0060022 finished seventh overall and came home the winner of the Group 4 GT class. A truly remarkable result with the speed of the car a testament to Kremer’s preparation and Wollek’s intuition pushing for this particular chassis to be the focus of Kremer’s Group 4 efforts that season.

For the remainder of 1977, the car was entered by Willeme Team driven by Belgian Claude Bourgoignie at Hockenheim and two races at Zolder where its pinstripe suit livery remained sans Burton lettering. By 1978 it was sold to Preben Kristoffersen’s Danish Wrangler Racing Team and re-liveried in Wrangler blue jeans colors. Remarkably, 0060022 had another win left in it at the 1978 Silverstone 6 Hours, finishing, again, seventh overall and first in GT class this time with Kristoffersen and Eberhard Sindel behind the wheel. Following a shunt later that year at the Misano 6 Hours, this 934 was sold to Fritz Engelhardt who raced under the pseudonym ‘Harry Hirsch’ with preparation by Max Moritz for the 1979 season. After five years of leading Group 4, BMW’s M1 had taken center stage, and many 934 teams moved to the Munich brand. With that, the competitive racing career of chassis number 0060022 came to a conclusion at the end of the 1980 racing season. With a class win at Le Mans, an iconic livery, and Bob Wollek at the wheel, it should be said that this 934 fared better than most! Like many specialty European racing cars of the period, this 934 is said to have been sold to Japan in 1981.

In 2006, Kremer Racing once again came in contact with 0060022, but instead of racing it, they would now restore it. Records on file from Kremer’s restoration of this 934 show a complete and thorough review of all major systems of the car. Before beginning work, Kremer notes that the car had been static for 25 years, properly lining up with its sale to Japan in 1981, and that a complete restoration of the vehicle would be completed. In addition to the necessary mechanical work, they were also tasked with returning it to the livery it wore during its most triumphant moment as the Group 4 class winner at the 1977 Le Mans 24 Hours. Naturally proud of their work and their previous history with the car, Kremer requested that they be able to display this 934 for three months following the restoration and following this display period it was sold to the previous owner in 2009. Judging by the entry stickers on its windshield, 934 chassis 0060022 has been enjoyed properly since restoration with attendance at Rennsport IV, V, and VI as well as the Monterey Historic Races in 2009.

More recently this 934 has been in the care of Porsche specialists, Road Scholars of Durham, North Carolina. While there, the paperwork on file from Road Scholars shows an initial overall inspection in August 2022 with leak down and compression numbers. The following invoice a week later shows a full (engine oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid) replacement with filter changes, and a full fuel system cleaning. On the same invoice, Road Scholars performed a comprehensive electrical diagnosis noting that wiring harness modifications were the cause of lighting and fuse issues. In November 2022, this 934 was fit with fresh Avon tires and a new battery.
