The vehicle in detail

Chassis No. WP0AA2956HN165108
Engine No. 45H03674

By the mid 1980s, Porsche’s “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” approach to promoting the 944 Turbo had spawned single-marque Cup series championships across the globe in Germany, South Africa, France, and Canada. In the United States, 11 factory-built 944 Turbo Cups were built to contest the 1987 SCCA Escort Endurance Championship. The Weissach-prepared Cup cars shared many similarities with their Canadian Rothmans Cup counterparts to the north in that they were lightened and uprated for competition while remaining road legal.

Each was equipped with a larger-than-stock turbocharger making the 2.5-liter Cup engine tunable to over 250 horsepower, a strengthened transmission, Bilstein shocks, 928 S4 brakes, a Matter roll cage, and magnesium “telephone dial” wheels among other modifications for high-level competition. While many of the eleven examples are believed to have been raced in SCCA competition, the Turbo Cup offered here, chassis number 165108, was destined to live a life of relative leisure.

Extensive original documentation on file, including copies of its Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin and sales order agreement, show that the Turbo Cup was originally sold via Sewickley Porsche Audi to Albert H. Pharis Jr. Additionally, the car’s original warranty book sticker notes that it was completed from the factory in Turbo Cup specification (754), along with a limited slip differential (220), external transmission oil cooler (414), Sekuriflex windshield (462), anti-lock brakes (593), without lacquer and chrome preservation (666), and cloth seats (990). The car was enjoyed by Mr. Pharis’s wife on the streets of Ohio, who traveled just over 7,400 miles in the Porsche before selling it to Bill Jones of Birmingham, Alabama in 2004. Invoices from Steinel’s Autowerks document a major mechanical refreshening conducted during Jones’s ownership in August 2004, showing 7,488 miles at the time. The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report shows that the car remained in Alabama with Jones for the next two decades, where it was serviced by Empire Autohaus, Inc. on multiple occasions. Most recently, in June 2024, the Turbo Cup was treated to an extensive service that included the replacement of the fuel tank, fuel rail, spark plugs, battery, fuel pump relay, fuel level sending unit, all four brake pads, and four new Toyo Proxes RA1 tires. Under current ownership, this Turbo Cup was campaigned in PCA Club racing events as well SVRA races including a win at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2005, and is accompanied by a set of log books meticulously documenting its on-track exploits.

Offered with 9,980 miles at the time of cataloging, this piece of Porsche racing history remains one of the most intact and original of its type, retaining its original matching-numbers engine and most of its original paintwork as verified by recent paint meter readings. Furthermore, this lightweight, factory-built racing 944 Turbo Cup is highly eligible for entry into many PCA and HSR’s Classic 12 Hour at Sebring and Classic Daytona 24 Hour, or could be enjoyed just as well on public roads. The car is offered with an additional magnesium wheel (in need of repair), a spare magnesium oil pan, wiper arms, and a fire extinguisher.
