The vehicle in detail

Engine No. 62L16491
Transmission No. 3L07571

This Carrera 4 coupe was used by Porsche to test the capabilities of their designers, technicians, and engineers until 1993 when it was sold ex-works into the private hands of Heinz Mohr of Mittenwald, Germany, a coach for Germany’s national ski team. With connections to the factory, he owned this unique 911 for just a single year before selling it to Frank Wörndl, alpine skier and four-time national slalom champion from Sonthofen, Germany. Wörndl returned this special 911 C4 coupe to Porsche in 1995 for a thorough servicing for which records remain on file.

According to these records, Wörndl’s ownership of it concluded in 1996 with it being sold to an owner France. Invoices and receipts on file and available for review, show French ownership and continuous use from 1996 until 2022. More recently, an exterior repaint in its original color of Green Pearlescent Metallic was conducted before leaving France.

Brought to the United States by a Porsche aficionado with an eye for the unusual, this Carrera 4 is an uncommon sight for those in North America not used to seeing these special factory-use test cars. Despite its time spent testing and in private hands, its appearance remains original inside and out. According to Porsche documentation and inspection from a Broad Arrow Auctions researcher, it retains its matching numbers engine and transmission and, included in the sale, its Porsche AG-stamped service book, HEPP medical kit, air pump, warning triangle, jack, spare, and binder of service records and German ownership documentation.

Porsche and the town of Böblingen have quite an unexplored history, but those with an eye for detail may have noticed the connection between the two over the years. The 911 GT1-98 Strassenversion in the factory museum is registered with Böblingen (BB) license plates, specifically, BB-GT 198. The 911 Type 953 Rothmans Rally car? Registered with BB-PW 946 license plates. In fact, most special, factory-owned Porsche test and race cars are registered in the town of Böblingen. So it is revealing that this 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 was originally registered with BB-VS 60 on 24 July 1990.

A deeper dive into a copy of the German vehicle title (Fahrzeugbrief) shows that the first owner was, in fact, none other than Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, better known as “the Porsche factory.” The fact that Porsche owned and operated this 1990 911 Carrera 4 goes a long way to explaining why it is equipped as it is. Finished in Paint to Sample Green Pearlescent Metallic, the exterior presents as an unusual choice for the period, but the interior is where this car truly shows its individuality. Likely testing the skills of Porsche’s best stylists and upholsters, it is trimmed throughout in analogous green leather, carpeting, and blonde wood trim. A sight to behold, the seats, dashboard, headliner, sun visors, and steering wheel are covered in leather with the front and rear seat upholstery featuring a 959-esque color deviation. The door panels are as well, but without the usual “Turbo” style stitching typically seen in 911s since the 1970s. The dashboard, steering wheel, shifter, and hand brake feature a blonde-colored wood that would not appear out of place in an early 1960s 911 when green was a commonly chosen exterior color. Matching green carpeting features throughout, even in the trunk! Finally, the Exclusive center console features the pièce de résistance of the 1990s, option 612, an in-car mobile phone, which was quite the status symbol and technological achievement in 1990.
