The vehicle in detail

Porsche 993 Turbo Background:
Porsche’s final air-cooled 911, designated internally and now commonly referred to as the 993 model, made its debut in January of 1995.  It was a Porsche that almost never came to be.  Rumors had been circling since the mid-1980s that Porsche was intent on killing off the 911 in all variations in favor of four and eight cylinder, water-cooled, front engined sporting models.  The 964, built from the end of 1989 to 1994 was initially a stop-gap model and dealers were told to advise clientele that it would be the last of the 911 line.

Interest in Porsche’s water-cooled, front engined 944/964/928 models failed to capture enough market share and the Porsche dealer networks and a fair number of vocal critics convinced Porsche that the 911 platform was far from dead and it would remain their mainstay product line-up since then and through to the present with no foreseeable end in sight.

Having learned their mistakes from 1990/1991, when no Turbo model was offered and realizing they needed to come up with something to inherit the reputation of the incredible 964 Turbo 3.6, Porsche’s 993 Turbo would not disappoint.  As such a Turbo model was offered simultaneously when the 993 model made its debut.

For the 993 Turbo, Porsche adopted a fair amount of the technology developed directly from their 959 program.  The 993 Turbo would have twin-turbos and a torque biasing, all-wheel drive system that was far more advanced and significantly user friendly than that found on the 959.  It was in fact so good, few would ever realize the car was all-wheel drive unless they took it out in the wet or snow conditions.

Producing just over 400bhp in initial form, the new 993 Turbo provided truly ground breaking performance, handing and braking, never before offered in a production Porsche.  0-60 times of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 181mph were officially recorded, but this was just the beginning.

In the Fall of 1996, Porsche announced a limited production “E50” version of the M64/60 engine would be made available to clients via the Porsche Exclusiv department.  This optional engine package known as the Turbo S, raised output to 430bhp.  An even further upgrade could be ordered if you chose the X50 option package which further bumped the power from the standard 993 Turbo up to 450hp (430 for the United States market.)  The X50 option package featured larger turbochargers and a modified engine management system.  0-60 timed runs dropped to 3.4 second and top speed was now just shy of 190mph!

A total of 5,978 993 Turbo models were built from 1995-1998, but just 345 of these were the ultimate specification Turbo S model.  Less than half of these had the coveted X50 engine option making it one of Porsches all-time rarest Turbo variant.

Porsche 993 Turbo S X50 Turbo II AeroKit, VIN: WP0ZZZ99ZVS370202
This particular 993 Turbo S, was also taken off the production line in October of 1996 and sent to the Porsche Exclusiv department for hand assembly and painting.  From begging to end, it took seven weeks to complete and hand paint this Porsche  It is an original “E50″ 430bhp model with the special supplemental “X50” upgrade that increased engine output to 450BHP!  It was also special ordered from new with the Turbo II AeroKit.  It is as such with a total of 53 individual options, the single most uniquely configured 993 Turbo S ever completed.

This Porsche was originally ordered via MITSWA in Japan for the head of a Chinese conglomerate but he was unable to obtain legal entry and road-registration in China and it was instead sold to a Japanese enthusiast.  We bought the car from the 2nd owner and it has only 24K kilometers / 14.9K original miles from new.  It is mechanically and cosmetically perfect in all regards.  On arrival we will be sending it to Vollig Autowerks for full service verifications and safety checks before delivery to the next fortunate caretaker.

Kind regards always,

Bill Noon
