The first Porsche GT3 appeared in May 1999 as the successor to the Porsche 911 Carrera RS. It was the first sports model of the Porsche 911 to be equipped with a water-cooled naturally aspirated engine. Porsche took the designation GT3 from the racing class in which the motorsport versions of the GT3 were entered, similar to the turbocharged 911 GT2, which was introduced in 1995 on the basis of the predecessor model 993. It was also named after the class in which the racing versions were entered. The base price at market launch was DM 179,500 in model year 1999 and DM 181,295 in model year 2000. Despite this rather high price, many buyers were found, so that the special series of this purist vehicle, originally designed for 1,350 units (685 of which were intended for the German market and sold within around two months), was subsequently increased to a total of 1,868 units, most of which found their enthusiasts in Germany.
