The car made its competitive debut at the 2000 24 Hours of Daytona. At the wheel was none other than five-time Le Mans overall winner Derek Bell. In the years that followed, the Porsche was regularly entered in prestigious international events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Spa, and the traditional 1000-kilometer race at the Nürburgring. This makes this vehicle one of the 996 GT3 Rs that were actually used at the highest level of motorsport.
A particular sporting highlight was the 2003 FIA GT season. In the highly competitive N-GT class, the vehicle achieved two class victories in the races at Enna-Pergusa and Anderstorp. The drivers included Tim Sugden and Emmanuel Collard, both experienced and internationally successful GT drivers. These successes underline the competitiveness of the vehicle in a professional environment.
After a subsequent change of ownership, the Porsche was taken over by Tim Sugden and converted to the coveted RSR specification by the successful GruppeM team in 2005. As part of this upgrade, the car was fitted with a sequential six-speed racing gearbox, revised aerodynamics, and widened RSR bodywork elements. These modifications optimized both performance and drivability and corresponded to the state of the art in international GT racing at the time.
Its last major race was in 2005 at the 1000-kilometer race in Silverstone under difficult, wet conditions. After an accident, the vehicle was professionally rebuilt. In the following years, it was used in hill climbs in Spain, among other things, before finally being added to an important collection.
Over the past ten years, the Porsche has been part of a renowned vehicle collection and has been carefully maintained. In the summer of 2015, the engine underwent a comprehensive overhaul at RS Tuning in Kirchhaslach under the direction of Reinhold Schmirler, known for his work with RUF. The investment amounted to around €54,000. The vehicle has not been used in competition since this overhaul. A technical inspection is recommended before it is used in racing again.
This Porsche 996 GT3 R in RSR specification combines prominent previous owners, renowned drivers, documented international racing appearances, and verifiable sporting successes. It is eligible to compete in numerous historic racing series and offers both collectors and ambitious historic racers the rare opportunity to acquire a factory-raced GT vehicle with a significant history.
