Intended primarily for racing, though still road legal, the Porsche 911 GT3 takes its name from the FIA’s GT3 category of production sports car racing, and has been produced in a variety of versions since its introduction in 1999 on the Type 996 iteration of the perennial 911, the 996 being the first to have a water-cooled engine.

The vehicle in detail

The concept’s next development, the GT3 RS, arrived in 2001. Standing for RennSport (literally ‘race sport’) the ‘RS’ designation referenced that iconic first-of-the-line model of 40 years previously. In GT3 RS specification, the 3.6-litre flat-six ‘Mezger’ engine was up-rated, producing around 400bhp, although the claimed output remained unchanged at 318bhp for homologation purposes. The RS was lighter than the ‘ordinary’ GT3; weigh saving measures included a polycarbonate rear window, and carbon-fibre bonnet and rear wing, while the stock cast-iron brake discs were replaced with ceramic composite rotors for greater fade resistance under competition conditions. RS suspension was adjustable, and the car ran some 3mm lower than the stock GT3.

The GT3 RS not only continued to dominate its class but also proved capable of scoring outright victories against more powerful prototypes; standout results being overall wins in the Daytona 24-hour and Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour races in 2003.

A factory competition car, this example was delivered new on 27th March 2002 to Podium Racing in Sweden. It was entered in selected FIA rounds and won the Swedish GT Championship. The Porsche was then sold to James Watt Automotive in the UK and campaigned in the ELMS. The car has competed in the following events:

2002 FIA GT Championship Anderstorp – Podium Racing
2002 Swedish GTR Championship Gelleråsen – Podium Racing
2002 Swedish GTR Championship Mantorp Park – Podium Racing
2005 Le Mans Endurance Series
2005 1,000km of Spa – James Watt Automotive
2005 1,000km of Monza – James Watt Automotive
2005 1,000km of Silverstone – James Watt Automotive
2005 1,000km of the Nürburgring – James Watt Automotive
2018 Le Mans Classic as a demonstration

Acquired by the current owner around 2007, the car has been restored and the current engine and gearbox have been used for around nine hours of track-days (according to the ECU data). All original paperwork is present including the original sales invoice. The car retains its matching engine and VIN numbers although when the engine was rebuilt the car was fitted with new crank cases, although the old ones are still available. The car is fitted with 2004 RSR brakes and uprights, with 2004 updated traction control, and is fitted with motion dampers. The engine rebuild was carried out by the Porsche Factory.

The Porsche also comes with an ECU cable and software for connecting to the ECU, an updated Motec dash with GPS and a new battery. The latest leak down test shows less than 1%. Critical components are all in date and the car is said to be ready to go racing. An ideal entry into Peter Auto events, it comes with tools, spare wheel nuts, brake pads, stub axles, pressure plates, ignition coils, original manuals, parts books, FIA documents and set up sheets.
