So now we come to the 996 Turbo S and we would like to welcome you to the absolute spearhead of the 996 series.
For many, the 996 Turbo S is the better GT2, because the GT2 was born for the race track - but on our roads it is just like the air-cooled 911 Turbo's of the time - more of a widowmaker and unless you are Walter Röhrl, the GT2 is already too overpowered for many with pure rear-wheel drive.
The 996 Turbo S brings its power to the ground with style and elegance. Not only do you enjoy the extra power and better response compared to the normal Turbo, but you are also accompanied by the fact that you are sitting in an extremely rare and limited vehicle.
Just 602 units were produced worldwide as the factory Turbo S Coupé.
A tiny number when you compare today's 991 and 992 Turbo, where it feels like every one was ordered as a Turbo S and it is almost more difficult to find an ordinary Turbo online than a Turbo S.
The 996 Turbo S is a sought-after rarity, no question about it, but what makes the Turbo S so special?
In contrast to the standard 911 Turbo, not only was the power increased to 450 hp, but the K24 turbochargers from the GT2 were also installed. Furthermore, the gearbox has been reinforced and the basic equipment significantly improved. This means that the Turbo S scores over a 911 Turbo with the X50 package, which has the same performance, not only in terms of equipment, but also in terms of limitation.
Collectors want low numbers and let's be honest, what sounds better? If you have a 911 Turbo with X50 and have to tell everyone that it is the same as a Turbo S or does it sound better if you say you have one of only 602 Turbo S built? A question you can answer for yourself - please don't take it too seriously.
In addition to the aforementioned extra 30 hp, the larger K24 turbochargers and the reinforced gearbox, the Turbo S is also characterized by other features:
- Rims painted in GT silver metallic instead of the usual Porsche rim silver
- Wheel hub caps with colored Porsche emblem
- Brake callipers painted yellow
- Aluminum-colored dials
- Shortened gearshift travel
- Turbo S lettering on the rear, door sills, rev counter and center console, whereby the latter can be omitted with the large leather extension option.
As you can see, the 996 Turbo S is a very special vehicle, which from our point of view has not yet reached its full collector's potential.
But enough philosophizing now, let's move on to the 996 Turbo S advertised.
And of course this is an original factory Turbo S. But it is a vehicle that was not exclusive enough for the first owner at the time, from the AMAG Schinznach-Bad management, so it was subtly refined to give the Turbo S the icing on the cake of exclusivity.
And what better way to do this than with the then current Mono/10 rims forged by Sportec in collaboration with BBS. Which today stand out as THE only aftermarket rims that enhance the vehicle compared to the original rims and do not devalue it from a collector's point of view like the other aftermarket rims. In addition, these rims have become part of the cultural heritage of Swiss Porsche and Audi history and it is hard to imagine an exclusive 996 or RS4 B5 without them.
To round off the look with the rims, a Bilstein coilover suspension was installed at that time, et voilà a completely different appearance of the Turbo S and yet even the smallest detail was taken into account, such as painting the Sportec rims in the original Turbo S rim color GT silver metallic, which also harmonizes perfectly with the exterior color Seal grey metallic. Furthermore, it was also ensured that these two modifications were homologated on the vehicle in 2007 to ensure that if you want to register the Turbo S as a veteran at 30 years of age in the future, these modifications must be accepted by the Road Traffic Office, as they were demonstrably homologated in the first 10 years of the 1st registration.
Attention has been paid to every detail and let's be honest, the pictures speak for themselves. This Turbo S is not only aimed at collectors who are looking for that certain something extra, but also at individualists who appreciate this beautiful appearance.
