The vehicle in detail

The 911 GT3 RS 4.0, produced in limited numbers from 2010 to 2012, is considered the best roadgoing Porsche 911 of all time by many enthusiasts, thanks to its track-focused RS specification and because it was the last series-production model to feature a flat-six with architecture developed by Hans Mezger. The late, hallowed Porsche engineer designed the flat-12 in the hugely successful Porsche 917 and the turbo flat-six engines in the Type 935 and 936 racecars, among others.
Engines in top-line roadgoing 911s such as the Turbo, GT2, and GT3 have colloquially come to bear Mezger’s name because they share the same engineering approach. High-revving with stratospheric redlines and overbuilt for road use, these engines were developed for long-term high performance in racing with no corner cutting. Not just more powerful, but also more reliable than Porsche’s conventional flat sixes, they featured a simpler bearing design with pressure-fed engine oil lubrication that was more robust than the failure-prone intermediate-shaft bearings of the M96 and M97 engines found in other production 911s. The so-called Mezger engines also sound throatier and more raw than other Porsche flat-sixes, thanks in part to their dual timing chains.

For the final years of the type-997 generation—designated the type-997.2—Porsche increased the displacement for the 911 GT3 RS from 3.8 to 4.0 liters, resulting in 500 brake horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The enhanced output came from a new intake manifold, higher-flow air filters within carbon fiber housings, less restrictive catalytic converters, Variocam-Plus valve timing, and a two-stage variable induction system. Even though the outgoing 911 GT3 RS 3.8, with its stripped-down interior and other weight-saving measures, was already lighter than standard models in the lineup, Porsche managed to trim a further 22 pounds from the RS 4.0 by fitting a carbon fiber trunk lid and front fenders, along with titanium connecting rods and even lighter interior trim.
Only 600 examples of the GT3 RS 4.0 were produced, with the example offered here being number 394. Finished in Carrara White with matching wheels and a standard interior in Black and Red, it came equipped from the factory with the optional Sport Chrono Package without PCM, Adaptive Sport Seats with memory function, red RS 4.0 logo on the rear, Bluetooth phone interface, Universal Audio Interface, floormats, and a fire extinguisher. Its accompanying window sticker indicates the car was shipped new to Porsche of Melbourne in Florida.
Amazingly, the odometer showed less than 160 miles as of cataloguing time, making this highly sought-after 911 GT3 RS 4.0 a collector’s dream—though it would be beyond tempting to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the Mezger flat-six’s intoxicating sound under full throttle at every opportunity. To enthusiasts seeking the ultimate, naturally aspirated 911 from the 997.2 generation, this is it.
