The Porsche 911 Legend: The New Book on the Carrera RS

434 pages packed with information about the legendary Porsche Carrera RS

Nearly a quarter-century after the successful and long-out-of-print debut work from 1992, authors and editors Dr. Thomas Gruber and Dr. Georg Konradsheim surprised the Porsche community with a new edition of their book “Carrera RS.” The 434-page, four-kilogram Carrera RS collector’s book has been published in English and German. It is a limited edition, individually numbered—only 3,000 copies were printed per language. The authors spent three years researching this thoroughly revised new edition. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG provided numerous previously unknown and unpublished photos related to the Carrera RS and granted access to internal documents from the Porsche archives.

The book “Carrera RS” introduces readers to the Porsche 911 legend

A Porsche has always been more than the sum of its parts. The Porsche 911 is the epitome of a sports car; its unique beauty has endured for generations. The characteristic ducktail, the thin-sheet-metal parts, and the Glaverbel windows all contribute to this. The vision of company founder Ferry Porsche was a “small, lightweight sports car capable of outpacing much larger and more powerful cars.” From the very beginning, motorsports played a major role in shaping the Porsche legend. In the first decades following the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, Porsche’s lightweight race cars became a symbol of economic growth and icons of technology and design. The book “Carrera RS” also begins with a journey through the motorsports history of the Carrera legends. The first chapter is devoted entirely to the Carrera Panamericana; the second and third chapters introduce the predecessors of the Carrera—from the Type 365 to the Type 550, the 904/Carrera GTS, and the Porsche 916 prototype, which the authors deemed worthy of its own chapter. This model paved the way for the Carrera RS with its signature Ducktail.

A Journey Through the Motorsports History of the Carrera Legends

Down to the smallest detail, this book highlights all the unique features of the Carrera RS, which was the top-of-the-line “911” model until the Porsche 911 Turbo was introduced. The model codes M471, M472, and M491 are sure to set Porsche enthusiasts’ hearts racing. The book documents the development of the Carrera RS, highlights all equipment options, and provides a comprehensive account of the racing version, the Carrera RSR. A special feature is the 40-page list of all 1,580 Carrera RS models ever built, complete with information on the model variant, matching chassis and engine numbers, delivery specifications, color, interior, tire selection, country-specific equipment, and equipment details. Handy: An included chart allows you to quickly decode equipment and color codes. The book *Carrera RS* is the perfect reference work for Porsche enthusiasts, collectors, and restorers.

The new edition of the book “Carrera-RS” is 178 pages longer than the first edition from 1992. Extensive research has allowed many new insights to be incorporated into the book. Through great effort, numerous previously unpublished historical photographs were tracked down, which now comprehensively illustrate the motorsports career of this legendary model. The book traces the origins of the “Carrera legend,” followed by a presentation of earlier Carrera models and a brief introduction to the 911’s development in motorsports.

The centerpiece of the book consists of chapters on the background of the Carrera RS’s development, its technical specifications, and detailed overviews of its equipment and all available options. The technology and racing career of the RSR race car are also comprehensively documented. The research took nearly three years. Among other things, Porsche opened its extensive archives and granted access to internal documents on the subject.

The text is supplemented by extensive photographic material, much of which has not been seen before. The book concludes with a complete list of all 1,580 Carrera RS cars ever built, including all production details such as original colors, equipment, and extras—an ideal reference work for all enthusiasts, collectors, and restorers. The 434-page German edition is individually numbered and limited to 3,000 copies. The book is bound in brown cloth and protected by a yellow cloth slipcase.
