For those of us who grew up with the 996 and 997 as the Porsche you remember from your childhood, it feels almost a little surreal to look back at Porsche’s first water-cooled 911, which today in many cases is a 20+ year old car. A car that was very controversial at launch not only for its new cooling system but also for the new design. For the first time since its launch, the iconic 911 had a new face. Today, the 911 series is a model that is over 70 years old, but the 996 still stands out as the only model that has received a design that stands out from the crowd.

Some variants have of course aged better than others, but the 996 4S is perhaps the one that has aged the best. The differences are small but oh so important, the slightly wider body which largely shares the look with the Turbo version sits like a toad over its 18″ ‘Turbotwist’ rims. The exterior here is in classic Basalt black which is combined here with silver rims and black roof for a wonderful overall exterior. The interior is dressed in black leather and follows the same wonderful design language as the exterior. Round shapes and a soft design language that are synonymous with this generation of Porsche.

This wonderful example came to Sweden in 2006 and has since been very sparingly used. 60902km indicated and a condition that reflects the miles.

Today in 2024. Almost 20 years after the car rolled off the production line, this black 996 4S stands as a splendid example of a body shape that ages well. What was initially seen as an odd bird has now aged into one of the most beautiful 911s.
