-September 15th, 1964

This particular Porsche was originally ordered new late in the Summer of 1964 and was by all accounts a standard but relatively late production example. It was completed in September of 1964 with the official recorded sale date of September 4th, 1964 which is also the same day the warranty period started.

The original order for the car was placed by Porsche North America, Teaneck, NJ. The order requested the vehicle be completed in „Ruby Red” with a black leather interior. There were two options installed new by Porsche. Seat belts left and right and coco floor mats. The original selling dealer then installed a Blaupunkt multi-band radio.

This Porsche otherwise had no additional options and was rather spartan as such having just the base 75bhp “Normal” engine. Warranty work is recorded by the Porsche Factory on two separate occasions, both when the car was relatively new in September of 1964.

Little else is known about the car’s history until the early 1990s when it was regularly seen in and around San Diego, California at which time it had been repainted to black and still had a black leather interior. The car was observed by Karl Denker at a PCA even in San Diego in 1990. He noted both the colors and that the owner was a husband and wife from San Diego and that they had owned the car for some twenty years. The paint was faded and the interior well worn but the car was rust and accident free and presented as a nice survivor, driver quality example. There was initially some confusion between this Porsche and a sister car that was also in the San Diego area at the same time frame.

Circa 2000, the car was at Neal Appel’s, Carrrera Autobody restoration facility which at the time was located at 3450-B, Kurtz Street in San Diego, not far from San Diego’s Charles Lindberg Airport in the Midway district. The restoration was fairly involved and completed and took several years to finish. During the restoration the exterior was completely metal finished and the car repainted again in the current black. The interior was likewise completely and totally restored but color change to tan leather with original type “oatmeal” carpeting.

During the restoration, it was purchased by a long-term Porsche enthusiast from Winter Park, Florida. Upon completion of the restoration and delivery of the car it was driven sparingly and kept at the owner’s airport hanger in Winter Park. On the few occasions it was taken out, it was frequently seen at a variety of local Porsche Club events and in in 2012, the owner’s friend Bill Warner and founder of the Amelia Island Concours invited him to show the car where it was very well received.

By 2015, the car was mainly stored and un-driven until November of 2021 when the owner purchased a very special, single private owner, 1973 Porsche 911S from our company and indicated he had this 356 and it was time to find it a new home.

The car was shipped to us and on arrival it was inspected and evaluated for a marketing and sales program. During the inspections we learned the cars front bonnet and rear deck lid where from a sister car. All of the car’s other panels and floors are original other than the front batter box floor pan. The panel fit and finish are extraordinary and there are just a handful of very minor cosmetic issues that need to be pointed out to find.

Most importantly, a copy of the original Porsche KARDEX was sourced and this has confirmed the car to be all matching numbers with its original engine and gearbox as installed new by the Porsche Factory.

The car arrived at our facility in San Diego but was found to be in a poor state of tune having been sitting for many, many years but well kept in a climate controlled indoor storage. The car was sent to Wayne Baker’s Personalized AutoHaus here in San Diego where the engine and transaxle were removed, the engine rebuilt, carburetors completely overhauled and the entire fuel system cleaned. A full major service and safety check was completed and new tires installed.

The car currently has less than 100 miles added since all work was completed in January of 2022.

Today, this Porsche looks as good if not better than it did when it was new. It also performs absolutely perfectly with the fresh engine and little to no running time on the restored and rebuilt gearbox.

All interested parties are warmly encouraged to contact us for additional assistance with bidding on this Porsche Cabriolet.

Kind regards,

Bill Noon
