The first owner of Chassis 111371 placed an order with AFN England on the 5th February 1960 requesting a Super 90 model in Ruby red over Grey Leatherette. Early correspondence from AFN stated that all Super 90 models for the UK market had been allocated but agreed to upgrade a 75 Super to S90 specification with the engine and suspension fully revised.
This early correspondence sets the tone for cars next 65 years, with meticulous love, care and detailed ownership rarely seen in any classic Porsche.
The cars history file is nothing short of breathtaking! A suitcase and 2 box files contain every piece of documentation relating to the car including all its original service books, delivery letters, sales literature, owners manuals, colour chart, buff logbook, a letter from AFN presenting the owner with a factory workshop manual, the list of very early documentation. The car even retains its original number plates from 1960!
Chassis Number 111371 was delivered to its first owner, Mr H.L Appley via on 26th May 1960.
The car was used sparingly during Mr Appleby’s 17 years ownership, covering only 35,000 miles and documented every single journey he made. It was maintained to the highest standard, recording every job carried out to the car and adhering to the cars service schedules.
When the second owner, Terrance William Bailey purchased the car he stated, “it was by far the best Porsche 356 available in the UK”. He continued to care for the car in the same manner as the first owner, maintaining the car to the highest standard. After 4 years under his ownership he decided to sell and placed an advert in Motorsport magazine in June 1976 for £1,200 GBP.
The car was spotted by an avid Porsche 356 fan, Robert Riddle who arranged to view the car and immediately noted this was probably the best example of a 356 he had seen and paid immediately for the car and it remained in his care for 45 years. It was Mr Riddle’s third 356, his first was a 356A from 1956 which he purchased in 1969. His second was a 356 BT5 (1960) which he purchased in 1973, it had the registration 8 AJJ. He remembered the car having all the usual 356 corrosion problems and decided that the cost of repair was too great so he sought a better example so when he came across 4300 RF he purchased it without hesitation.
Mr Riddel returned to Australia in the late seventies taking the car with him and it continued in his ownership for 45 years continueing with the highest level of care and meticulous maintenance shown to the car by the previous 2 owners. Eventually after 45 years it was time for the car to find a new home and the car was offered to Export 56 having covered a fully documented 75,300 miles over 61 years.
