A wonderful opportunity for an enthusiast seeking an elegant, well-presented classic Porsche 356 with documented early California provenance and a character all its own. This beautiful classic combines timeless Porsche styling, exceptional presentation, and a documented connection to California’s early Porsche history.
Documented Porsche and California Provenance The original Porsche Kardex documents the car’s original sale through Competition Motors in Hollywood, California, and records its original factory specifications. (The dealership where James Dean purchased his Porsches.) Surprisingly, the car retains its original 1963 California license plates, which, according to the current owner, have remained with it since its original registration.
These period plates provide a distinctive visual connection to the car’s California history. A copy of the California title issued in 2010 also identifies the same plate number, providing additional documentary evidence supporting the car’s California history. Based on the ownership history to date, the car has had three owners. Available records including the Kardex, copy of the previous owner’s California title, with documentation timeline and receipts from current owner are included.
With its original Porsche factory record, surviving California plates, and historical title documentation, this 356 offers an appealing connection to California’s early Porsche community. Restoration History According to the previous owner, the coupe underwent the exacting restoration between 2010 and 2015 at the Sherman Oaks, CA shop of Claudio Zampolli in his Sherman Oaks, CA shop, the Italian automotive engineer and entrepreneur known for creating the extraordinary Cizeta V16T supercar. The previous owner reported knowing Zampolli personally and attributed the restoration to him. Unfortunately, no restoration invoices, photographs, or other documentation have been retained to independently verify his involvement, however, the conversation continues as the previous owner searches for any information he may have.
Exceptional Presentation With brand new Michelin XZX tires mounted on German manufacture chrome rims, the exterior presents beautifully, with glossy silver paint, bright chrome, and timeless proportions that have made the Porsche 356 one of the most admired classic sports cars ever produced. The interior features fresh red leather upholstery, complemented by the classic Porsche dashboard, period instrumentation, and carefully finished interior trim. The silver-and-red combination gives the car a particularly striking appearance, and highly sought after. The front luggage compartment is equally well presented. This authentic, dry California 356 has an exceptionally clean, solid underside and provides an excellent overall presentation. Typical trouble areas of a 356 underside such as the doors, longitudinals, pans and lower body edges are in fantastic condition. Distinctive Sporting Details added During Restoration These details give the car a distinctive personality while preserving the unmistakable character of the classic 356.
• Arbath style exhaust with a sporting, Euro-inspired character. (which can easily be changed back to a stock style arrangement if preferred) • Rear reflectors delete for a cleaner rear profile. • Additon of an original Talbot racing mirror. Engine & Mechanical Information Within the exceptionally clean and detailed engine compartment, the car is fitted with a replacement 60-horsepower Porsche 356 engine from the T5 era, in overall superb mechanical condition. The engine starts readily from cold, runs smoothly, and provides full responsive performance just like its 75HP brothers both in town, and on the highway.
