1960 Porsche 356 B Roadster by Drauz – RM Sotheby’s

From its humble beginnings, Porsche’s 356 evolved into the car that established both Porsche and the 356 as industry icons. A class win at Le Mans in 1951 showed its capabilities, but it was legendary New York dealer Max Hoffman who influenced the factory and made it desirable among wealthy American buyers. The 356 B model ran for three years from 1960, featuring styling changes and technical upgrades. Launched at the 1959 Frankfurt Show, the body, designated the T6, featured raised headlamps, a re-designed fuel tank for better luggage space, and a larger front boot lid. The interior boasted better instrumentation and more comfortable seats, and the convertible got a better top. It was a sophisticated European sports car capable of a 185 km/h top speed. The model attracted celebrities like Steve McQueen and Janis Joplin.

The vehicle in detail

There were three engine options, but the choice for enthusiastic drivers was the Super 90—because of its horsepower. Aimed at performance drivers, it featured a higher-lift camshaft, revised compression ratio, and a pair of larger Solex carburettors. It meant the car could be used as a daily driver midweek and for sporting events at the weekend. This example was ordered in black as a 1600 S through Hoffman’s distributorship and despatched in 1960, making it an early B. It spent its early life in California before undergoing a full restoration in the United States. To give it a more sporting nature, the car was upgraded to Super 90 specification and was fitted with a period-correct 1600 S-90 engine. When it was exported to the UK, the correct type of Rudge-style wheels were forged and fitted. Today this beautifully restored early B would be a thrilling addition to any collection and is supplied with a copy of its Kardex and letter of origin.
