The history of the Porsche 911 began at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12, 1963, with the presentation of what would become the first generation of the Porsche 911, the Type 901. Due to opposition from the French car manufacturer Peugeot, which had registered and used model names with a “0” in the middle since the mid-1950s, Porsche decided on November 10, 1964, to replace the zero with the next digit, the number 1. The new model was unmistakably a Porsche, as it incorporated key features of earlier prototypes and remained in line with the Porsche 356. The windshield was more upright than on the 356, and the glass surface was larger. However, the most distinctive stylistic element was the smooth and continuous curvature of the roofline, which began at the top edge of the windshield and extended all the way to the rear bumper. This design, aesthetically pleasing, also improved aerodynamic efficiency.
