The Alpine Racecar
Without knowing much about the car, Steffen the owner, handed me the keys and I set of into the alps. From Stuttgart to Zell am See mostly on motorways the ride quality was soft enough to enjoy the time behind the wheel and the meaty Michelin TB15 race tires worked out well. From there I headed on the legendary Großglockner and Nöckalmstrasse and here the car started to shine! The IROC turned sharp and precise in on every corner gripped hard like chewing gum on the asphalt. Never have I driven an old 911 that felt this stiff, no flex on the chassis but with a lot of finesse on the suspension to keep the car firmly on the road no matter how much speed you try to carry into and out of a corner.
That evening I called up Steffen and shared my adventure and thoughts about the car. Only then he confessed that he seam welded every panel on the car over the factory spot welds. Even though this takes mind bending time and patience it has paid of big time and explains the incredible refinement this IROC Tribute has to offer.
The other remarkable and possible most charming thing he made to the car was to paint strip it in an immersion bath and then have it cathodic dip coated, but instead of the standard black KTL bath the car was dipped at a planed that had specific John Deere green on side. Mind you the car was intended for himself and not build for a client. So, any way to keep the cost down was welcome. Today the Green vinyl “Carrera” script on the car is, to me at least, is a small tribute to that feat.
